Much warmer than usual, mid 30’s. Burning ash, maple combo and sweeting my ash off. Can’t believe I’m wishing I had more box elder left! At least the furnace is still a consistent 10+ degrees from kicking in!

It got up to 32 below at our place today. Was 38 below when when I got home from work and getting a load of firewood. Really Needed the wood.
    Poplar in the stove.

Yeah you definitely have more unique ground issues than us further south. We get frost heaving here in the Rockies but its minor and no where near what you get in the north. I find it interesting you say that there are thaw stable areas. If you believe what they tell you on the never wrong boob tube or internet you would be convinced that all of the norths permafrost is melting.

Rope we are a mild -5c/23f right now. If you want some of that I could send it to you for a day or two. You might feel like youve gone vacationing in the tropics though....
I just loaded the stove with larch and doug fir for an overnight burn. Supposed to be -18c/0f overnight but I dont see it happening.

It's been a bit windy this evening, all three gov't weather stations around me reported gusts over 40 MPH. The temperature has dropped from around freezing to about 0°F as well. I'm running a bit short on firewood too, but there's a row of DED Elm 50 yards away. I got enough snow yesterday to bank up the basement walls, and that is one of the latest I've waited for enough snow.

I need to bank this cabin as well. I think this is the least snow winter I've seen here. Which is why I haven't banked the house yet.
With perma first ground , if you set something on top of it that can collect heat. Like a building or a power pole, sign post ect. It will cause some thawing in the immediate area.
Things like the VSMs= vertical support members that hold up the TAPS= Trans Alaska Pipeline system.
    Most vsm's have a thermo syphon. .
Filled with an inert gas that has a low boiling point. The TS pulls heat from the ground and keeps the area permanently frozen. So the pipe stays where it they put it. Baring a major seismic event.
Lots of buildings have thermo syphons around and under them .
Thaw stable ground . Is not a problem because it has very little water suspended/saturated in the underlying soil.

19 feels like 10, and snowing. 74 inside and I just threw in a couple pine splits to burn the coals down. It’s supposed to warm up and change to rain this afternoon and overnight then cool right back down tomorrow and switch back to snow so it’s another mess. And of course it’ll be below zero this weekend so it’s gonna freeze up tight.
Since I only have about a cord and a half of dry wood left I ordered another cord of KD yesterday to be delivered Friday. It’s looking like winter might finally arrive in force in the second half and I’m not going back to burning oil, even in the spring shoulder season. That is if I could even keep the boiler running that long lol.

20° here and a feather thick layer of snow. Birch on the coals as always to restart the fire. I got to burn oak yesterday as it stayed in the 20's, but back to red maple today, high 30's expected. I saw some big punky oak and big cherry chunks at the dump yesterday. I wimped out of trying to get them because I was cold, but might try today if they're still there.

28F this morning. Thin layer of ice on everything. Loaded some elm but will let it die out this evening to clean out ashes real good before the cold arrives the rest of the week. Supposed to get in to the mid to upper 40s with rain today.

High of 58 yesterday. Low of 48 last night. Boiler got too bored and went out. I'll fire it back up this afternoon.

Winter is supposed to come back for the rest of the week. Temp starts falling continuously from now until tomorrow night when we bottom out at 14.

What Could Be In Store This Winter?

"When we get these big disruptions in the polar vortex like what's predicted — and the models have been all over the place, I think there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding this event — but the large events like the models are mostly converging [on] now, it tends to kind of slant or skew the weather to cold and snowy for up to two months," Cohen says. "So it could take us all the way to the end of February.

"Right now, there's no reason to expect severe winter weather, cold and snow. But from mid- to late January to maybe the end of February, I would expect a more active winter period across at least the eastern half of the United States: more cold-air outbreaks, more possibility of snowstorms. And then also, with these polar vortex splits, the western United States tends to — not necessarily, but tends to — I would say get a little warmer and drier."

Right where I want to be.
I predict temps to be colder than the rest of the year, with the distinct possibility of some snow.......how cold and how much snow would be a guess and just pizz people off, so I'm not goin' there.
If you burn wood, put up more than you need, just in case things get a little hairy. If you burn something else, put aside more money than you need to cover the cost of that.....you know, just in case.
