    Hello,

I cut down a tree for a neighbor, thought it might be some sort of hickory based on the bark and other trees on the property. I included a couple of pics of it after I split it.

Looks like black walnut to me unless the lighting is messing with the color of the heart wood.

It’s decent firewood, has a nice often bluish flame-the downside side is lots of fluffy ash, not a big burner in my hoard but a middle of the road BTU producer akin to ash...but not as clean to process or burn-Definitely worth burning

Here is my splitter, 6.5 hp 25 ton, my saw, Echo 590, and my current supply of hickory and osage orange.

I think the coloring of the wood in question is a bit off, too reddish to be black walnut, maybe that pic shows it better?

It’s black walnut I believe...Love the DHT splitters, you might consider the logs trays, wish their style was compatible with mine-I’m going the custom route to mimick, plan to make them fold out—-again, welcome and enjoy

ChadB74 Welcome to another Michigan Hoarder! Looking at the Greenish tint turning brown after splitting I'm going to guess Locust. I can't see enough bark pattern to be sure though. How heavy is the wood?

I was born there. I, however, have no recollection of that prestigious occasion.:)
    Welcome aboard ChadB74 .
    That does look like Walnut.

Based on the pics, I’m stumped... sorry not much help-
Edit- does your neighbor have any pics with the tree in the background? Maybe with leaves on it?
How tall was the tree? Diameter?
Maybe a clear shot of a good piece showing a lot of bark... a close up of nice non-grayed end grain...?
Either way- welcome to FHC :handshake:

Yeah the bark looks way off to be walnut.

I'm not sure what it is but I am pretty sure it's not black walnut. The heart wood doesn't look dark enough to me and the bark is too rough from the walnut I've had experience with.

Welcome to the group, ChadB74 . I have an expert opinion on your flora in question...It IS BTU'S waiting to be released when dry...:sherlock:...I don't have any experience with the northern varieties, but sure looks like some of the black walnut we have down here in the south. I've seen some with dark heart and lighter color heart. And rough bark. Just a guess.

I agree with papadave , Black Walnut at the bottom with another variety mixed in on top.

Stuff on bottom does look like BW, the other splits if I were to guess look like cherry, but it's hard to tell from the pics
