Took the time to measure the stacks today. So far I've brought down 1.2 cord from the stacks, with .32 still remaining on the front porch. Have 1.96 cord on the deck that will be used next. Have 2.4 cord still on the stacks, hoping it won't get touched this winter. Also have approx. .75 cord of cut but unsplit wood stacked. Stove has been burning non-stop since around October sometime. More than I'd like to have gone through this early, but wife is happy, and the temps only drop below 76°F in the early morning hours, usually 78-80°F in the house.
Here's the Queen of the hill on her birthday morning this year. My dad never bought her flowers, always just picking what was blooming around the fields and woods. We picked these from our yard and wildflower garden, my wife fixed the omelet and sausage and I cooked the cheese grits. This is a 3 sided wood box we just built for her. It is 3' x 3'. Holds about a week's worth of wood. Helps contain the mess from the wood. And her Fisher stove. This is her inside rack that we built using a set of old hand trucks and made some standards for the ends. We use this when it's nasty outside or I'm working and my wife moves the wood in next to the heater. She is worth way more than this. She and daddy wanted children bad, but didn't work out. So they found 5 different little ones that needed love and a better life. And adopted us...so glad she is still here with me.
Around 3 cord so far. But it's been a warm winter so far by and large. And that's mostly all poplar/aspen. We did just come out of about 2 1/2 weeks where the temp never rose above 0°F. It was 10 or 11 below when I went to bed last night and 8 above when I got up this morning. Looks like we may get a January thaw. It's about 25 above atm. South wind blowing . But we haven't had any real cold yet this winter. My coldest has been around 25 below. I was planning on going and getting a load or 2 tomorrow. But instead I got called in to work. Putting a track back on a D6H.
I didn't even realize I had been tagged until I saw my name quoted in another post! I had figured 1 3/4 to 2 cords so far but I live in a small home with a small stove, so feeding 2 cord through that tells you that black box is never hungry. I think I manage so well with poplar due to the fact it lights up easily on a moderate coal bed, and you can throttle the air back extremely quick. I think in terms of a top down fire instead of the "char all the wood at once" and it works great for me. I don't need all the wood burning at once, I just need all the smoke produced burning at once. I'm not sure how the other fellas manage it, if they treat it the same as other wood or not.
I like it because it builds a good bed of coals that last much better than spruce. But, I don't have yo over think my wood burning. I don't live around any air quality gestapo.
Well, there's a few guy wondering where the heck their winter is at so far this year. I know Suburban wood snob can't get blessed with cold weather and snow, but there must be others as well.
Mid October - Mid December were well below average here. The past couple weeks have been mild. Overall I'd say we've been cooler than average so far. I've burned about 1 1/3 cord since I fired up the new boiler system heating 3,500 sq ft and making DHW. With old smoke monster in the basement I would have burned at least 2.5 - 3 cord of wood, if not more by now.
What a sweet lady, to adopt five kids! I agree, she deserves primo firewood as long as she can burn it! We used to have the same model Fisher.
Beautiful woman, and touching story. Her charm and modesty are evident as she ignores the camera to smile at her offerings with full understanding of their symbolic relevance and significance to the life she lived and provided for her children. I like the smart convenient system she has to load the Fisher stove. I can see the wood even gets a bit of a pre-stove "kiln drying time" to help it start up blazing easy for her. The hand truck rack modification seems to hold a few days worth of wood rather handsomely as well. Good job TJV! Stories like yours are what it's truly all about.
Thank you for the kind words. I definitely wouldn't be on this Earth if it wasn't for GOD and her. I was 3 months old and weighed a little over 8 lbs when she got me. I saw a picture of me then, I looked like a white version of some of the kids you see on TV. But she kept the feed in the trough...lol..I'm 6' and 225# now...Good LORD has plans for me....
Oddly enough, I have a maul that's 3 months old and weighs a little over 8 lbs haha! I'm an inch shorter than you, and flirting with 225. I need to spend more time "Cuttin Splittin Stackin" and less time "Snackin at the feed trough". It didn't help that I just got back from a two day wedding extravaganza after already over indulging during all the Christmas hoopla visiting family! While I'm on the topic..... a Happy New Year wish to all my extended family on the FHC forum!
I'm sitting on three cords of two-year-old red oak and have barely burned squat so far this year due to a mild December. Of course, I just jinxed us to a witch of a January . I had four cords of fresh-split white ash dumped in the yard about three weeks ago for next year and beyond. This supplier charges a premium but dang, his stuff is quality. He and I plan several months ahead on what species I'm looking for, he custom-cuts the rounds to a requested length (usually 18"), splits to the size I want and the wood goes from the splitter, up a conveyor and into a triaxle bed without ever touching the ground. The only dirt on the wood is the splits that were on the bottom of the pile when he dumped it in my yard. There have been nightmare stories on this board and some others of people getting a load of wet, dirty mulch delivered. As before, he ain't cheap, but he delivers the goods.
Burned a cord of the PNW blend since the beginning of Oct. I burn pretty close to 24/7 and surprised how far a cord can go in a well insulated house. My friend goes thru 9-11 cords a year and I will be lucky if I burn 3 cords. Close to same sq. ft. home just one is 100 years older.
between 1/2 and 2/3 a cord here i guess, only burning between 5-6pm to midnight-ish, since october about a log every 40-60 minutes
