Watch the whole thing. This was splitting elm. Splitter running about about 2/3 throttle. Just taking my time and working easy.

Hi Dennis, You split those 10 and 12 inchers much the same as I do. Split the log in half, split one of the halves, then I split one of the quarters every now and then! Don't know if you were doing it similar to that by design or not but it makes a variety of sizes for efficient starting and burning. I usually split horizontally if I can but vertical comes in handy also. If I was to do a lot of vertical splitting I would certainly get a milk crate like yours. Then I would know I was splitting with style! Maybe even a cushion with trees and campfires embroidered on it! I think I will consult the group in another post in "The Wood Pile"for a suitable design!

Backwoods Savage Forgot to mention that I saw how you got in some "double licks" by splitting two halves at once right near the end of the video!

I do the same and stack the splits into my tractor bucket, then once it’s full I stack that load and repeat. Repetitive motion of any kind causes me a lot of pain after a short while so breaking it up like that really helps me to last longer. Slow and easy is the name of the game. The hardest part for me is changing the splitter from horizontal to vertical and vice versa but I’ve got that pretty well figured out without wrenching my back.

I bought a 150 watt heating pad for my splitter and had some time today to try it out.
Plus it was finally cold enough to actually use it.
Seemed to have worked quite well. I plugged it in for about 40 minutes, took about 4 pulls and the splitter fired up.
There was some resistance on the pulls but not bad. I also am using aw32 oil.

Good to know you had positive experience with the heat pad.

I have been keeping mine in the garage and have not changed out to synthetic yet. I have wanted to do both hydrolic and motor oils at the same time. I think I may be getting close to the 8 hour range. Have wanted to get to 10 hours making sure the rings seated. Splitting the white spruce I don’t run the motor much 1/3 throttle. It’s been nice not having to run the ram more than a few inches to split the rounds. Occasionally a knot on the opposite side of the wedge requires a full cycle.

I am completely looking forward to that. Most likely will need to plug it in for 2 hours before trying to use.
My yard looks like I am keeping hogs back there. It would be nice for an extended freeze.

I just clicked over 12 hours on mine, already did the 5 hr oil change, will be swapping filter at 25. I'm running synth motor oil but dino hydraulic.
I actually don't know what the factory filled it with, I assume it's dino 46 but I topped off with dino 32.

Where did you get the heating pad for your splitter?
I tried to start mine today it sputtered a few times but would not stay running. Will try again another day when it is a little warmer.

Thanks! I am going to try my magnetic oil pan heater and see if that will work.

Magnetic will work, your local parts store may have them in stock. Or perhaps something like a tractor supply place.

Made the splitter grunt a little bit today. I didn't get a video of the biggest rounds. Wish I woulda thought about videoing sooner...

I'd say they split pretty good. Logs with knots always split harder but the splitter was up to the task.

I thought I would share my splitter with you all. I bought it about 10 years ago with no tires no engine or pump what hydraulic hoses that were left were shot but I really liked the design I mostly split big pine rounds and it works great
    KIMG0906.JPG
It pivits up so it is super portable
    KIMG0909.JPG
After fighting with a old riding lawn mower engine the last 10yrs I bought a new predator so far it has been great
    KIMG0907.JPG
This is my favorite part when you fold it down the table is about 2foot off the ground so you don't have to bend over this foot pedal controls the ram so you can throw a round on the table and youse both hands on the round to spin it
It is super fast and efficient the ram returns up when you let off the pedal
I don't know if these are still being built or not but if I was going to build one I would copy this design pretty close
I'll have to go get a picture of it set down I don't have one
hope you guys like this I sure like this forum just thought I'd share
