It was a bit cranky today, sputtering when I turned it sideways to do hinge cuts. Like a plugging fuel line or it about to run out of gas. Then it would be ok for a couple minutes, then get cranky again. Finally, it sputtered to a stop and the smoke started coming out of it.
they are not supposed to do that Jim, shortly some saw guys will be here with hints.. Besides its smoked sorry
Smoke looks like hot metal. Any chance the gas didn't have 2 cycle oil mixed with it? Whatever it is sorry for the crummy luck. On the bright side.... maybe a new 365 around the corner. Also appears from the pic it has been used for a long time.
Yes, gas and oil mix. Good gas, good oil. I've got a 372XP as a spare along with a smaller Stihl MS230. It was used for many years by my late father in law. He was +80 when he passed away in the woods, working pulp, just like his did for +40 years. When I acquired the saw, I just cleaned up the air intakes and put gas and bar oil in it. It ran good for years until today.
You can get a new OE piston and cylinder for it for less than $150. I would make it into a 346 while you're at it. About a 1/2 hp. more than the 353. Also, get the new metal clamp and intake boot for it too. That original plastic intake clamp is probably what toasted your 353. They still are one of the better 50cc saws out there in my opinion and well worth repairing.
Do those have the updated partition and clamp? Is the intake boot clamp metal or plastic? How old is the fuel filter?
This is where owning a few chainsaws is so beneficial. If one gets cranky, it's probably for a reason. Best to swap saws or at the least shut it down and investigate.
You're screwed now....you let the magic smoke out. They will never run once that is out! When its escaping you need to gather it up to try and put it back in
Time to break it down and show us what you find, then rebuild. With as many hours as you have on that saw I'd have a very low threshold for splitting the case and replacing bearings and seals while you are in there. Please keep us updated on your progress Good luck.
I'll probably replace all wear parts while I'm at it. I've frigged with lawn mowers before and even torn saws down but I've never rebuilt a saw before, so any help is appreciated. I've got two other 353s that need fixing too.
I thought that only applied to electronics. I've released a fair amount of magic smoke over the years.
