I picked up my helpers today for some firewood work. I usually meet them at the store in a nearby village. That is a routine enough on some Saturdays that I suspect some busybodies think I am getting kids for weekend visitation. Part of the adventure was their first venison pot roast. I got it started first thing this morning. We cut up a lot of the maples that I had dropped in the pasture. Then stopped at 1:00 to prepare and add the vegetables. After that we went about a mile into the woods to cut some blowdown. Before I got to the two I planned on, we found a recently downed shag bark. Cut up about 100 feet of limbless trunk, and split nearly all of it before sunset. They were always cheerful and never asked how long were going to be doing this. Richelle is an old hand at the splitter controls now- has a feel when to feather it when it starts to strain on a knot or tough piece of wood. Went inside just at dark and quickly consumed the entire crockpot. They said it was similar enough to beef, that it wasn’t an exotic acquired taste. I was a a Big Brother for two different boys who are now men. Sharing new things with a pair of great young ladies is a nice change of pace. They are safely back home with no indication of being tired. Me not so much.
That’s awesome Sourwood! My daughters learned early, and they can handle firewood with the best of them. Good on you for passing on your skills!
Spent part of today hauling the rest of the hickory out of the woods. Its all split, and mostly stacked. Came out to near a cord. While in the woohds, i got a pretty good length of a tall maple cut into rounds. That should be my 2020 wood.
