And let us not forget the 6 month guarantee that Woodstock offers. Very few take advantage of this simply because the satisfaction is so great on all the stoves. It is one reason we decided to go with our purchase as at the time I was not 100% certain the Fireview would be enough stove for us so I could use it for 6 months and if it was not big enough I could buy a larger stove. Ha! We were extremely surprised at how that little stove can heat and yes, we also learned what a "soft heat" really felt like. As someone stated, you can stand right next to the stove even if it is at 700 degrees or go a couple rooms away and you are not either roasted or cool. Very comfortable.

Well, there are times, I guess. At one of our get-togethers we did tend to roast a few folks out. We usually keep the temperature around 80 but not all are accustomed to sleeping in that temperature. We had guys opening doors and windows in the night.  One fella had always told us he really looked forward to sleeping in a house that was warmed by a Fireview. He finally got his wish...and yes, he got a bit warm.

    Very true.

That did factor in as well.

Not aware of any other manufacturer that offers a 6 month winter trial.

If you really need low and slow burns, then you probably need to be looking for a cat stove. A tube stove will be able to handle both high heat and low heat, you just need to manage the sizes of the burning appropriately .

Yeah the ht2000 is a big stove. I dig the modern looks. Each to his own

i am on my 2nd NC30 - new home to me. Already new what to expect and the 30's are inexpensive as compared to a lot of other stoves ( ya I'm cheap sometimes). I looked at Woodstock offerings but just could not get the purse strings to open that far.

Never read War and Peace. LOL! Have no clue...
Yeah...being too warm is a concern.

I may do that after the holidays. Was planning on taking a trip in that direction any way to the Good Time Stove Shop. I'm an hour left of you and an hour north. :D   Go across I-70 you went too far.

As bad as it may hurt to say it, if I bought one of those IS...it would be exactly for the reasons you listed. One reason I haven't discounted it totally.

I don't necessarily need the long slow burns, but I know there will be times I would like to go that route.

Another thing I thought of going with a soapstone stove, or a stove that is lined with soapstone, or even even I got a nice steel stove and placed some large soapstone on top and maybe even replaced the firebrick with soapstone, then I could burn a few small and real hot fires and simply use the residual heat from the stone to move heat slowly into the house...similar to the way a masonry stove works.

I'm going to throw out some bait here...
I've been keeping my eye out for a stove called The Elm, by Vermont Iron Stove Works, made back in the 70's. Here a few years ago one of the co-owners/designers of the stoves had revived them and was rebuilding them, turning some of them into tube stoves, and had parts available too. Classy little stove. Whether or not I ever use one, I will own one. Been looking for a long time for one to rebuild. Only thing is, I've tried and tried to contact Steve Slatter about one, looked on the web page, facebook, tried email, and had no luck contacting him about a stove. If someone has current contact information I would greatly appreciate it.

Do you mean “ Back in Time Stove Shop?” I bought my Pacific Energy there. I also paid them to drop a liner in my chimney, that didn’t go well. I sent you a PM.

Why do you care? Did someone take a dollar out of your bank account for every word he used?

I guarantee, if Tom is gathering old stoves to retrofit, it's not to add tubes! It's to add cats!

Man... My head hurts after reading this... Way too much overthought... As for reading reviews on the net... 1/2 is usually BS... I take in thought about a 1/4 of that... and believe whats sqeezed out... :rofl:  ... As with most things, if there is going to be abuse, someone will figure it out and then end up being pizzed off and write about it... But many of the stoves that have been mentioned here have a pretty well built reputation... And when you really think about it... Every three years on a cat stove aint that bad considering what your getting out of it in return. Still with a tube stove your have PM on it... I take my tubes out every year, clean and blow out... and clean the top portion of the stove out... So with everything most everything requires a little PM... Good Luck... :handshake:

Just remember you don't know the IQ of the people that are writing the review.
FHC members most know what seasoned wood is:yes:

Imagine reviews of vehicles where gas tanks were 40% water..

I'm a little confused with some of the statements in this thread.

    So far in this discussion we have;
EPA/cat stoves run away, over-fire... Routinely.
Cats are hard to clean, are (overly expensive.)
(25-50 cents per day is too much to spend on a cat that gives you more heat AND saves you 30-50% wood usage? at the same time?)
Cleaning ashes out of a cat stove is difficult at best...

It was not in this thread but as I was reading your post I could not help but think of all the bull I've read about cat stoves being so complicated to operate. After all, there are 2 levers one has to move rather than one! No matter that a child can run the stove or even some blonds.
