Anyone here serious about coyote hunting? If so what's your preferred method? We here are just getting going for the year. We cover a lot of territory trying to lure those bastagies out. Couple of the guys have 100 acre properties set up for deer so we bait those areas. Nice sitting in an elevated and heated stand. We have a lot of woods around that we will use various calls and decoys in. We have hunted out of an ice shack on some small ponds scattered with dead fish. Go set up a lot at night and hunt the evening. Basically do everything we can to try to get 1 or 2 a week. One place we go has a great setup for 3 groups of 2 to hunt, 3 half acre food plots on about 60 acres with lots of woods and a big bog in the middle, usually productive when we go there.

When you take a coyote out of the current population the females will have a bigger litter to compensate. It’s a never ending battle. Fun as hell though.

Yeah they claim that they can withstand 70% mortality and still keep a healthy population around here. We normally take care of 2 to 4 dozen each winter.

It's fun to call them in and watch how each one approaches different calls. It's never straight forward, who knows what is going on in their heads.

I really need to start hunting them on the state land we hunt. The coyote population has continued to soar and it's destroyed the deer population. This season I seen more coyote tracks in the snow than deer tracks.

Can you guys recommend a good call/s and the basics needed to start hunting them?

I have a Foxpro Shockwave and a few different reed calls. Biggest thing is to use a call to get the response, always different depending on each dog and what interests them and the time of year. We use decoys to give them something to go to, motion is great using a distress call, coyote decoy, fawn decoy, full body rabbits, crows are great for confidence boosters. They will sit back a lot of times until they identify what they are hearing. I shoot a 22-250, 223, 243, and 12 gauge depending on where I'm at. But as said they maintain population somehow knowing losses. We have tons of private lands that are open hunting owned by paper companies and thousands of miles of woods roads we will pick a spot and set up on, I own 500 acres in northern Maine thats all woods and a 30 acre field, friends own several hundred acres in different areas locally mixed woods and fields so we have places to go to. Setups are usually about an hour each and we move on. Give it a rest after you call a spot before they get wise to it, usually we will wait at least a week. Get out and locate areas with activity to set up in.

Anyone have a night scope? We have chickens etc. & always hear the coyotes at night. Seems that when they come down near the houses on our farm. I’m no hunter & we try only to respond when our animals are threatened. Perhaps a night scope is not even legal? I saw a you tube video where a fellow was having great success with a night vision scope. As I said I really don’t know a lot about hunting but that video intrigued me.

Thermal is the way to go but you can spend lots and lots of money on one.
