Splitting Fir

    Except for the knots and crotches, this is about as hard to split as anything I cut. The Fir log has survived the wet and weather in good shape.

    Worst wood I've split is spruce . Pretty much had to run the ram the full length of its stoke. If I had more of it I would have added a board to the foot so the wedge would kiss the foot. It was sorta rubbery and just wouldn't pop at all. It wasn't stringy at all, it just didn't want to split.

    That's how you do it! Small, medium, large. Small to get the fire going, medium to build it up and large to get it heated through the night.

    When i split fir, i take off all 4 sides first, if its straight grained i slab it, then stack it on the splitter, then, split into the nicest kindling you've ever seen. I can split a wheelbarrow full in about 15-20 min, that's a heaping full one.
