Been thinking about getting a winch for the truck to help with processing firewood. Harbor Freight has a Badland 2,500 LB winch on sale for $49.99. Just wondering what others are using and if this would be big enough and input on this brand?

I've had zero issues with 12k lb badland winch on my truck. What exactly do you want to do with 2.5k lb?

Just looking to pull out dead ash trees that I can't easily get to to process. There not large trees by any means. Just wondering if this winch would be big enough to accomplish this?

Honestly, I doubt it TBONE . 2500lb isn't a real strong winch for a long pull, I use a 12K gas powered hydraulic, but that's a really pricey setup. I would lean toward something like SquareFile is running. Electric winches make a lot of heat & amp draw on a long slow pull. Keep in mind that most winches are rated in rolling pull, not dead pull stats. 2500 rolling weight doesn't translate in to much on a dead pull/skid. Another thing to look at is duty cycle, 20% duty cycle means just that. Rated only to run under load for 20% of the time. Hope this is clear as mud.

I don't think the 2.5k winch will skid logs. That's an ATV size winch and those aren't continuous duty winches. If you look at the manual for them they say 45 seconds of maximum rated pulling with a 14 minute rest period. You'll probably want to look for at least a 9k winch to skid with.

I have a 2500 lb winch that I use to pull trees the direction I want them to fall. It has wireless remote, works pretty well for that, but for skidding it would be kinda weak...and slow...as mentioned, the duty cycle on those sucks.
