While I was getting ready to cut up a downed Cherry top, I could smell the Wild Leeks in the air.

The deer are nailing the tops of the leeks, one of the areas I was in today, they're up better than any place else on the property.

Deer and rabbits got almost everything in the woods here. Doesn't seem like they were being picky about what they ate.
    Tough winter.

Potato Leek Soup is the first thing, spaghetti sauce, mix cut up leeks in hamburger before you make patties.

The fiddleheads in this area are about ready to pop through the ground.

Not that green carpet look yet but with another .25 inch of rain with warm weather it won't be long.

I guess they don't grow under pine trees so chance of ever finding any here are slim to none.

There's a park that's right on the PA/WV border about an hour south of Pittsburgh, where they hold an annual ramp festival. It's your basic rural craft fair, with pottery, biplanes made out of beer cans, chainsaw carving and hippie jewelry, but pretty much all of the food available is flavored with ramps. Ramp burgers and hot dogs. Deep-fried ramps. Ramp candy. Ramp wine. Mason jars of canned ramps. We went two years ago, enjoyed hearing a bearded guy bravely sing sappy Barbara Streisand tunes while accompanying himself on a guitar, and brought home a couple of paper sacks of fresh ramps. It's scheduled for late April this year. Hope it's not too late!
