I just picked one of these up the other day for helping a neighbor. Now it looks like it has a chain brake on it but there is no brake band or spring to it. Does any one have any experience with these.

Depends on how many parts are needed to make brake functional. If it needs lever, band, spring, I'd bet you could spend $50+ chasing obsolete parts. Take a pic with clutch cover off.

After doing more research I believe it’s just a hand guard which is ok with me, this won’t be a main daw.. more of a collection piece

I've got an older 015L that I need to get running. No chain brake on mine. It was my grandpa's saw.

I started climbing many years ago with an old, beat-up 015. I rebuilt the saw and ran it til the crank seals gave out. I still have that multi-colored saw (I pieced it together from several), if I can ever find AM crank seals, I'd love to get it back up and running. I actually have around 6 of those saws in various states of repair, one of them is like brand new, but the seals are hardened and shot in it as well.

They were one of the best top-handled saws you could get at one time.....

I picked up a non runner to tinker with. After several attempts to get it running I set it aside for another day. There is no chainbrake, only handgaurd. As mentioned parts are hard to find and used parts are of questionable usability. Neat little saw, someday I will try again to get it running.

Got an 020 of the same vintage, as stated, guard only, no brake. Cool old saws & fun to run. I changed mine from the 14" 1/4 chain to 3/8" low pro 16". Armbru84 found me the correct oiler gear NOS. Parts are obsolete & a bit spendy, but if you've got a runner, by all means run it.
