It's alive! I just finished fabricating the lift and winch set up it's not the fastest but man is it gonna be nice. Now I need to run the wiring properly.

I started to wonder where the DC lead was going to. The truck battery! YES!
I like it, now tell me (us) how you are really going to wire the winch.

Looks good Pete, but I'm curious how much money you saved when it's all said and done by using the winch instead of hydraulics?

I am going to buy the biggest marine deep cycle battery I can and a solar trickle charger. I am not mounting the battery because the splitter rides like a blocked hot rod down the road and I don't want to hurt it with all the bouncing.

Even with the free $50? winch your still looking at a $80-10o for a battery, 20 for a charger, wiring etc... And you have ongoing maintenance/replacement costs with the battery and winch cable.

With hydraulics you'd be looking at less than $175-200 for a simpler system with somewhat less maintenance costs. (60 for a valve, 70 for a cylinder, 20 for 2 hoses, a few fittings and about 15 in shipping). That assumes you'd plumb the valves in series which some say is the wrong way to go but plenty of splitters have been done that way without issues.

Not saying your way is wrong. Just how I look at it ;)

I always think… if what I've rigged up makes the work more enjoyable because it's a little easier on my ole back… then it's money well spent… ;):D

If your truck has a 7 pin trailer female light/brake coupling, I believe the center pin is the HOT directly to the battery. You could use that. I sometimes pull a friends dump trailer and when the battery on trailer is dead I just plug it in and it handles the hoist hydraulics.

I'm not disagreeing but for free I'm ok with a winch for now. I figure a free winch is worth it. Actually I found a battery maintainer in my pile of crap today so I don't need to buy that now :D funny I don't remember buying that. The marine battery is $75 at Meijer's by me when I checked today. Overall I have $87.93 into it after the battery and hinges because I found everything else laying around the garage aside from the winch that my buddy gave me.:drunk:

Busy day. Shoveled a dump trailer load of chicken chit on the garden.....changed the oil on the tiller...and tilled the garden. Stacked a cord of wood. Took the kids mushroom hunting and didnt find anything. Cooked some pork steaks on the fire pit for dinner. Having a rum and root beer.

Got treated to an absolutely gorgeous sunset on the way home tonight. The picture doesn't begin to do it justice. Had a great day, lots of laughs with my sister in laws. Now going to put the boys to bed and enjoy an amaretto sour and relax a little.

Put sides on the trailer to keep small hunks of wood from sliding out of the openings. Made them so they are removable in a minute or two.

Looking good. Mine are more permanent, but I wanted to stop the small stuff as well.

Nice work on the trailer sides there guys. I have a ton of work I want to do on many different things but no time to do any of it right now. First thing I need to do is get this yard cleaned up! WOW. What a mess.

Same here, finishing some yard work today and then converting the porch back to being a porch. From late Oct to now it serves as winter wood storage, it's a mess of wood debris right now. Happy Easter!

PHOTO_20140420_115841.jpg Got the boys trampoline done this morning. Tilled some of the garden. Now to resist the urge to plant and let the little weeds come up. Run the planet jr over them and then plant. Family dinner time soon got to clean up.
