I am not sure if I can answer that right now

The opening in the marble is 36" wide and 29" high but there is a sheet metal liner inside that is a couple inches wide on both sides and it tapers towards the rear

It has been 15 plus years since it was installed and I am not sure what is "original" and what might be part of the gas insert system

I am not touching it until the appraiser gets here next week to look at all the damage

After that I will most likely shut off the gas and power and pull the damm thing out

I am sure I can get a few bucks on craigslist

So you'd need to run whatever the diameter of the stove you'd want for SS liner. Typically most are 6"

Would a wood burner also use the twin fresh/exhaust hose system?

You can use a fresh air intake.

    Good to know, thanks

I will keep you guys posted on any progress

It may wait until summer as we leave for Hawaii for the winter right after New Years and don't come back until after the snow is gone

I will need to concentrate on getting structural damage dealt with before we go and with just a month to do it I doubt I will have time to spare for a fireplace

Where to in Hawaii? I just got back from Maui. Now I'm working at getting plumeria started and growing in our house. :)

We have owned a condo on Molokai for a number of years and actually bought a house there this last summer

The condo will go on the market after we get there in January and get it all fixed up

It got flooded in October of last year by renters in a unit above and it took over a year to get it put back together

That's why we bought a house...

    So done with condo living

Let me know how the plumeria works out

Maybe you can go into the Lei business

    LOL

I'd be cautious of getting the marble dirty also. But....if you look at the pic that Horkn posted, you will see absolutely no dirt, stains, etc. on the wall! Tell her she can put her concerns to rest.

Also tell her that it looks real nice! (and unused!)

    She will appreciate that

We lived in the White Mountains of Arizona in the early 90s and heated exclusively with wood

All she remembers is the constant stream of bark crumbles on the living room floor, ashes from the stove, and the occasional blast of smoke into the house

I have told her that any actual issues with the performance would have been due to old technology and that modern units have that all solved

I have been nagging on this topic for years but this time I am determined to prevail

I mean why the hell else would I need MORE CHAINSAWS!!!

    Wow, that is quite nice

The pictures on the website will really appeal to her

I can see her wanting a marble wood box to match the hearth

Might help swing her around to my side...

    THANKS!!

It'd look better with some ashes on it ;)
Maybe you could install a soapstone stove in there...she might like that look...kinda like this (just as an example of what I mean) (Woodstock Fireview in the pic)

I will certainly consider this and will show her the picture

I am wishing the hearth was deeper now to accommodate this possibility

I am not sure if it would be safe as it's only 13" deep

Something out that far would be teetering on the edge and the floor around the hearth is covered by a rug (for now)

    Thanks for the input

There are some really cool looking enameled finishes available on some different inserts out there too...maybe that would help grease the wheels a little...Enviro -Product

    Absolutely will help

Whatever we end up with will certainly be color coordinated to some extent
