I am a little confused. The sales Specs say 19"max log size. In the manual It says, "Wood Length (Maximum) 16 to 18" " which do I follow. I have a bunch of splits at 18 7/8 and they do fit in the firebox. Will they hurt the stove?
I burn 16 inch, because layout on measuring tapes is right there. 16 inch gives you 1.5 inches clearance front and back. The stove takes off and burns better. Hard to get exact splits in decently. I haven't shut down my AS since end of september, and the cat is still spotless. Love this stove. Burning only lodgepole now. I believe it was Lorin from woodstock that told me she burns 16 inch also.
My normal splits are cut 16". I got a rejected load of firewood at a good deal and the majority of the splits are 18 7/8". It would be a PITA to cut them down, but could be done if needed.
As Papa said if it fits, it’ll burn just fine.... just make sure there’s no squeezing the door shut...
You could add a couple at a time diagonally on top of a "normal" load. Different stove, but I've had better luck burning 16" splits too, even though I can fit 20"ers. I think it's an air flow thing.
I normally cut mine to 16-17" but if its longer, it still goes in as long as I can close the door. Sometimes it had to be diagonal on top
If the log does not fit, you must acquit…'er, wait, what?! As PapaDave said, if it fits inside, it'll make heat...no worries on your 18 7/8 splits Rog...
Marshel54 the reason Woodstock says to burn logs shorter than the 19" is that the fire will react better if you give it room on each end of the log. No, that does not mean you can't burn the 19" logs; it just means it won't be best. 16" is what is called for with the Fireview but if memory serves me, I've actually put in a 19" log but it has to be centered in order to fit it in. 18" will fit fairly well, but we still cut to 16" for best results.
Each 1” less than 19” represents about 5% of the firebox capacity. And then we could really get carried away and factor in the great loss to saw kerf with shorter wood! I shot for 18” when cutting for the AS.
