Just agreed in a sale of my 441 parts/rebuild saw. As soon as I revieve payment I need to ship it to the buyer. The buyer suggested Fedex should be around $20.

Does that sound about right? Is Fedex the best option?

Use the Firewood Hoarders Club saw hand off to get it there. You drive it to the next closest FHC guy, have coffee and chat for awhile. That guy does likewise and soon the saw is at the guys house, and a new FHC member. :dex:

    Or FedEx!

About 200 miles. Insc would be pretty minimal.

I've used all three... A lot depends on the end destination... Packing...Packing...Packing... Drain the fuel tank... I like to double bag my saws... get a good heavy duty box thats slightly oversized of the saw....... Did I mention Packing???... amateur cutter :D

Great thread! I’d like to know the best way to skin that cat. I’ve had at least one negative feedback and was advised it would have been cheaper if I did it on line. I used UPS, so I don’t know what he meant.
I’ve alway used UPS because they have boxes.
Weight, size and distance are the variables. And UPS has a price estimator on line. Last thing I shipped, with a 4 dollar box, went from Mass to Miss and was shy of $2/lbs.
I think crossing the Mississippi has a penalty too.
    What are the best practices?

A good friend of mine said "pack it as if the post man were going to kick it the whole way there!"

I've used UPS for every saw I've sent. Packed very well, wrapped in a garbage bag or two and a dryer sheet on the top to mask any gas oil smell. Pics to show packing.

Like everyone mentioned, treat it as if they are going to play soccer with your package.

Gettysburg to Ohio was around $30 with insurance.

I like USPS for everything. I've had no luck with UPS in regards to them getting stuff delivered, they always get it wrong for me. Stuff that's sent to me via UPS ends up at a house 3 blocks up from me. Lol

Just make sure you drain the fluids good, I always put the saw inside a plastic bag and I pack it really good with bubble wrap, heck I've even used wood noodles to pack up saws and it works great....I hate pacing peanuts, especially as the receiver of the goods.....they can be a PITA....

At any rate, I see some good suggestures here....
