This was my dads cant hook. He's been gone 10 years and is the reason I run chainsaws. When this snapped I felt sick to my stomach. I was using it pretty hard but never thought I could break it. Upon further inspection, it looks like it's been comprised by some sort of bug. Don't even know hot to go about replacing it.
That's a tough post to like Jrider, but you can have a new handle made for it to last a bunch of more years. I have a pair of 10" Ridgid pipe wrenches, ( straight and an offset) that were my grandfathers, when the teeth on the jaws run down they have to be replaced, but the wrench handles remain the same. A lot of work done with these wrenches throughout the years, hoping they will be passed down to my boys one day. My Dad would turn out a killer Handle for that bad boy on his lath.
Sorry to see it jrider, but have to look on the up side - you have a wall hanger of the old handle, and it will be an easy replacement so you can keep using Dad's equipment!
Is there enough meat on the broken end to reshape it and reuse the same handle? You would loose some length. The end cap would work though the hook collar might need a liner or epoxy filler. Just spit balling here! There is always a replacement handle. I know it would not be the same as original but at least the metal parts would remain! Surely your Dad would still be smiling when you used it! I am placed in mind of the antique dealer who was trying to buy an old axe from a hillbilly. "Yes sir that axe is over 160 years old" said the canny hillbilly! It was owned as fer back as my Great, Great Grandaddy. The dealer finally agreed to pay an exorbitant price because of the hillbilly's sworn pedigree on the axe. As the dealer was leaving the Hillbilly was still singing the virtues of the axe! Yes Sir them old tools was built to work hard. That there axe has worked so hard that handle has had to be replaced 4 times and the head at least twice!
Wait! Stop! Don't repair it and waste time. It would look fantastic hanging in two pieces over the mantel. In the meantime I have one 98% new you can have! Please say you'll take it...
What would your Dad do if he had broken it? ….I'm going to take guess.....he would fix it, and keep work'n it.
Scrounged a PV handle out of a dumpster the other day looks just like that. You could have it were you closer.
And this is why FHC is the best forum/family going. Now you'll have a real story to tell about two different tools jrider . One from your Dad & one from a real friend. Way to go scavenger !!!!!!!! Good on ya!
There ya go. In thinking about this last night, I thought what better way to honor his memory. You fix his tools .. now it is your tool also. I have been doing this w/my Dad's tools. I love using them......knowing that they are both our tools.
