Hey guys I'm new to heating with wood so far it's been going good but i started using the log cabin style and it starts up really easy but it gets hot really fast and i pretty much have to keep the damper shut to stop it from overfiring and i didn't have to before with all the logs north south i'm assuming it's just because of more airflow? It sounds like you have good draft. Another way to start a cold stove is the "top-down" method. Load big splits in the bottom/back, a couple of small splits top/front, and a couple sticks of kindling and a starter on top of those. This will heat up the top re-burn section of the stove quickly, and create less smoke outside since the smoke from the wood that's catching fire is rising into the flame and being burned. It will also burn up the smallest amount of wood while you get the stove up to temp.
