Well, finally getting ready to replace my 1997 Poulan 2079. This saw has been with me since new and still runs like new to this day. As I get more and more into this hoarding thing I started dreaming of a new saw and decided it is time to purchase. I know what I want but my question is 550xp or 555at. I can get either saw for the same price on ebay just wasn't sure if there was any advantage going either way. Any thoughts on this ?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Well, AT is nice, as you do not have to get the Husky/Poulan unobtainium EPA limited carb adjuster to tune them. Also the 555 has about a half horse more power than the 550 and is a 60cc saw. The 550 is one of the best 50cc saws ever made though, so it is hard to say. It is also lighter at just under 11 pounds, vs over 12 pounds for the 555. The 555 is more of a non-pro saw, whereas the 550 is an xp pro. The 555 is the smoother of the two, with about 15% less vibration.

Check out tlandrum for a good price on husky. Better service than ebay.

I can't locate info on a Poulan 2079, are you sure that model is correct?

You should be aware that you are comparing two saws of different design intents and capabilities. The 550XP is meant as a fast, quick-handling limber that can take on small to medium trunks. I wouldn't ask it to run a 20" bar full-time however.

The 555 is more of an all-around firewood saw. Not quite as powerful as the 562XP but built just as well for a few bones less.

My recommendation would be based on if it's going to be your only saw and what kind/size of trees you typically cut.

Got my firewood cutting girlfriend a 550 xp last year. Put a 16 inch bar on it. Thing absolutely rips ! Most powerful.... Zippiest.... Best handling 50 cc range saw i have ever had in my hands... In stock form :). I have owned a lot of saws from 50 cc on down BTW. :) The 16 inch bar balances the saw perfectly in the hands ! As stated above... If you are thinkin 20 inch bar... Go with the 555. That bar would ruin the advantages of the 550 xp IMO.

The 555 is the same saw as the 562, just slightly de-tuned (ignition is slightly different and the 555 lacks crank stufferz). But other than that, the 555 is the same.

Just as the 545 is a de-tuned 550. The 545 runs right with the 550.

My vote is the 555. You get a very nice firewood saw (one of the best 60 cc saws ever made / 59 cc respectively ;))

The 550 is a great saw. But if it's gonna be your "Main/ Go to" saw? Then go be and be happier.

Here is a 545 and a 550. They use almost all the same parts, just lacks crank stuffers and ignition/timing is different. Also, the XP uses Grey on the saw. I'm not a fan of the Grey. Looks like cap after a short while. The 555 and 562 are the same way. You will have a pretty all orange saw :)

Unless I am mistaken Dex, I think there are differences in the cylinder porting as well. Now you got me wantin' to go dig up the IPL's......

I thought it was just ignition/timing and stuffers?

The stuffers are the "Rev Boost". Gives the charge extra Umphh! Into the cylinder.

I was dead set on the 550 until I saw the 555 for the same price . Then I started thinking that I may have a need for the 20 inch at times so maybe I will jump on the 555. Thanks for the reply .

Its always better to be over prepared ! From what i have heard.... People say that 555 may be the best firewood saw value out there. If you get it.... We will need plenty of pics.... And a test review :)

I have a 545 and a 550XP and consider one as good as the other. Yes I know the 550XP carries more rpm in the cut but to me the price difference is not worth the increase in production. One is made as well as the other and are both PRO saws on my list.

I consider the difference in the 555 and the 562XP to be the same as the 545 and the 550XP.
I would just buy the 555.

Maybe some restriction in the transfer covers. Cylinders are identical between those saw families 545/550 and 555/562. I may pick up a 550 here soon to try out. I've been underwhelmed by the 50 cc class by all the ones that everyone says are the best ever. 555 was way better stock than any 346.

I think he's going to be pretty happy with a 555. I just looked up what a PP 2075 was. :)

Also the cylinders are NOT the same part number. That doesn't mean the casting itself isn't identical, as the different covers are probably included with each respective cylinder. That said, I know which number I'm ordering for replacements. ;)

    555 Cyl/Piston Kit = 575355802
    562XP Cyl/Piston Kit = 575355801
