The dried white spruce is not too heavy and with log tongs, its easy getting them into position. We have too much snow to roll the rounds. In the horizontal I only have to slightly bend to pick up the round. But when the boys move the wood it was even easier. I don't think any of the rounds are larger than 40 pounds. Most of them in the 20ish range. I tried the vertical for a few minutes, it was easier horizontal and faster. However if the weight of the rounds were more, I think your right vertical would be better. I may start harvesting some white birch, I will have to try both positions to see what I like better. Think I my give a pickaroon a try, may eliminate having to bend over all together.

Mr. Savage, "I know" this will make your eye's swell in tears! :tears: Yes, and I did a full cord today while Chrissy did some stacking and watched ;). One problem with this whole picture, I can't find my dam red milk crate and I think it's full of crap in the storage unit. :p

That round looks way to heavy to sling to the horizontal position. I can see why vertical is the way, that milk crate needs a cup holder.

I "used" to be able to toss up some rounds about 200lbs. Not any more and the one you see was fresh "wet oak", I couldn't even lift it. I have a horizontal splitter but I now appreciate being able to go vertical!!! Having a splitter is a blessing, I should have got one 10 years ago!:zip:

Exactly what I found too...I did get it running eventually...but it was not pretty or easy! Note to self...don't let the splitter get to down to 10* if'n ya wanna use it!

That's why after a few pulls, I put her in the garage. I needed to see what I was dealing with. I have the 5 gallon bucket of synthetic fluid. I am going to change it out as well as the motor oil. Moving over to synthetic in all fluids.

Thanks my friend! Sitting down takes some getting used to! Those big ol' rounds were just to much to pick up! I finished up that load of Oak today. I got just about 3 cord out of all that. :) Hope is all well with you up there!

I remember thinking the same thing and put it off way too long. Finally said to heck with it when I got a super deal so bought it. Then wondered for sure why I had put it off! Ours is a 20 ton and does everything we need done.

Oakman69 I echo Mr. Dennis, now that I have used a splitter once, I regret not buying one sooner. I had some trepidation about getting one because I can physically do the work. After being able to see how much work was accomplished. I now realize how much time I have wasted be cheap by not making the purchase.

Think slapping one of those oil pan heaters on the hydraulic tank would make it easier?

Wouldn't hurt, think that's where synthetic comes into play. A Kat's 300 watt magnetic heater would work and easily be removed.
