I have been cutting a lot of bigger stuff and wanted a saw with a little more snot than the 372XPG. I found a used Dolmar 7900 that the previous owner said had less than two gallons through it and had the original chain that was at about 60% condition. I could not pull it over briskly enough to start it without the decomp button.

They have been around awhile and ar e suppose to be great saw, lots of guys around here use them and lots of guys still have never heard of them. So far I am impressed they are a little heavier than other brands but they seem to be really well built and thought out.

Nice saw Firewood Bandit! Love the looks of the Dolmar 6400-7900!!

The nice thing about that saw, is for the cost of a top end kit, you can have a different size saw. 3 different sized saws.. All in one.

I think the Dolmar is a good looking saw! Maybe someday......:saw:

I love how that wirehair is looking at you like "what are you doing" when taking his picture.

That's a nice saw! We just had a 6400 come into the local shop as a trade-in. It's dirty, tired, and has some scoring w/ low compression. It will be re-born with either a 7900 top end or a big bore AM kit. I think you'll like that saw. We have a Dolmar dealer right in town which is nice.

I get some bigger stuff. The 372XPG wasn't exactly shabby on it though.

I just did a little PM on the new saw. The yellow stuff on the bar came off and it appeared to be some kind of sap, nothing WD40 wouldn't take off. The bar also had two sticky price tags still on it where I could read the original price of the bar.

The inside of the power head had virtually not sawdust and the rim sprocket had virtually no wear.

I sharpened the chain although it was sharp the angle was too steep and I brought that back to 25 degrees and the angle on the rakers was flat rather than sloped. I've got tons of new chain but just can't throw out a good one. The chain on it is Oregon, probably LGX.

    Update,

Before doing any serious cutting I checked the high speed unloaded RPM on the new/used saw. What I mistook for 4 stroking was actually the saw bumping the rev limiter. This was instantly diagnosed when I checked the saw with a tach because you get readings all over the place. Further the saw high speed was already against the limiter tab. Rather than clip the tab made a trip to my trusty Husqvarna dealer who also sells Dolmar, (although not many). He pulled the limiter tab and moved it so that the high speed would have travel and then retuned the saw. First thing he said when he saw it was, "that's a new saw".

FWIW the saw was set a little rich at 13,100 rather than 13,500 which is recommended max.

You can tell it's not been worked hard since there's not a hot place on the front of the muffler.

Well it got worked hard today. It pulls pretty impressively with the 24" bar buried. Although the large dogs do reduce the effective length of the bar.

It will get an even better workout tomorrow as I need to finish the 10+ cord pile of logs that are next to a landowners house. I got most of it cut up last fall until the ground froze and they couldn't be moved. His land was logged and I have permission to cut. So far I have been cutting off remnants off the log landings. I got a bunch of cut offs from the loggers when they were working. They would load my trailer with the log forwarder and off I would go.
