Aldi (and Lidl) are really taking over here and forcing the established supermarkets to up their game.
I find the random special buys have an amazing knack of tapping into what we need. I brought my first petrol chainsaw from Aldi ( I've upgraded to a Husky 560 xp since) which worked a treat and all their stuff comes with a 3 year warranty which is cool.
I'm off down there now to buy pizza for my boys dinner :)

There stores here in the U.K. are relatively small so you can get in and out and find what you need quickly.
Ok, I'm all done gushing over them.

Gush away. They are pretty good...when did you get them in the UK? It's been about a decade since I have been to Britain, but I don't recall seeing any in and around London.

It was probably about then they started popping up, now we must have nearly 1,000. They've done well at a time when in real terms due to inflation and wage stagnation people have been feeling the squeeze. We're you here for business or pleasure SWS?

I saw an Aldi in the UK when I was 21. I'm 45 now. Not being great at math, I'll defer the calculation to others.

That is why I was excited when they started cropping up round here.

Much to my horror, there was no beer aisle in the local stores. But that's PA's fault, not Aldi's. In England, there was a whole aisle of beer. Including two litre bottles, like soda here. And low cost stores brands. They even had malt and other home brew ingredients.

Wife and I went there for part of our honeymoon, and I was back on business. I love the UK. We're planning on coming back eventually.

There is an Aldi about 20 miles from us here in GA, we've been in a time or two. Put in your .25¢ deposit, get a cart, go shopping, return cart get yo quarterback...as far as products go, just like everywhere else, some Walmart brands are as good or better than name brand, some not. Went to Mayfield dairy plant tour in TENNESSEE, guess what, yellow and clear plastic jugs on same line. I worked for several years for Rheem A/C plant. They had Rheem and Rudd brands. One had green jacket on the outside, other brown...

Robert Reich did a really interesting YouTube video about how only a handful of companies are supplying nearly all the food in every grocery store in the country. The branding is different but most of it originates at the same factory or company. Kinda frightening that in a land of such apparent variety, the reality is that the supply chain isn't filled with competition at all.

Interesting that you mentioned that. I just stopped into Aldi quick for some needed taco ingredients. Took this picture. I figure it’s the most interesting section in the store. You don’t usually think of a generic brand beer. But if you look closely, you can definitely see what name brands they are supposed to be similar to.

You might be surprised how much heat is still there, even in crappy, punky oak. I am burning some of that very stuff right now. I got it last year off the side of a mountain. I wasn’t going to just leave it there to rot and come back empty handed. It was punky then but has layers that still have some solid parts. I c/s/s last summer so its good and dry, punk and all. Right now I am burning a load of it and I cannot even tell it was punky previously. No, it doesn’t last as long as a solid piece but its giving off so much heat it’s almost too warm in the room. Don’t write off punky oak too quick— you might be surprised. A lot of times it’s still worth burning. Just make sure it’s good and dry and has no bugs.

I usually try n get most of the punk off when im splitting....takes a while...usually im in no hurry. It helps to keep the mess down when loading n unloading the wood box....

I've taken punk off oak too, with a chisel or the chainsaw. I'll always pick up punky oak, because there is a good chance that it's ready to burn. Even better is oak with the punk completely gone, just ridged looking wood.

Uh oh. This is sounding like one of those commercials that ends with 'seek medical attention'.
