I see that there is a lot of activity around the woodshed throwing axes, but has anyone constructed a single purpose target/backstop? My bud is wanting to set something up for when his son comes home for xmas. I was thinking of two sheets of 3/4" plywood fastened to a solid pallet and leaned up against a tree. Oh yeah, with a 'target' marked on the plywood too.
Welcome aboard 2mauls I think I'm understanding your first post as using plywood for axe throwing target? I would not use that myself. Doesn't seem like an axe would stick into it.
Looks like you can use the plywood for the backside of the target.... Target Construction | National Axe Throwing Federation
If you wanna take a trip to MI I've got a 42" diameter Oak log I can cut you a couple 1' rounds off. Couple long lag hooks & a good rope & limb & you've got a target. Nice round log too. You figure out how to lift it to hang it.
That’s more or less(talking about yooperdave link) how we constructed one for my buddy’s bachelor party a few years back. Was a lot of fun. I was in charge of buying hatchets so I went to harbor freight and picked up 10 cheap hatchets. I also needed rubber gloves for shop work. Kind of suspicious items to buy together, cashier kid kinda chuckled. Have fun and be safe.
All the axe throwing targets I've seen have been a large pine or other softwood round, 30" to 36" diameter and about a foot thick, mounted to some kind of log tripod.
Soft wood does make more sense (so much for trying the easy route). At RenFest the wall looked to be pine 2x4s with the narrow edge out. 30" to 36" could be kinda small for my accuracy (or lack), will have to be against a hill! amateur cutter's 42" might be more my speed (and I'd like to see that Farmall too!). Thanks for all the great info, I will post pics of what I come up with...
a customer had a large ash and I cut him a large block but the axes would not stick very good I ended up cutting him a 28"by 16"thick round of white pine that worked good except for the sap getting on axes
