only have the bark to go by it's a large tree I think it might be either some type of ash but I really think it’s a cottonwood... any help would be great

Put a saw into is a give it a sniff. Ash, especially white ash has a spicy/peppery smell. But I concur with earlier posted-- bark is thicker on cottonwood, deeper ridges. Whenever I have a positve ID I always take a big whiff incase there is a distinct smell. Unless its apple-- apple smells like farts.
Welcome to the forum Kevin. Ash. But beware, yellow poplar bark is very similar to ash bark...but the wood is not. Ash is much, much better. Take all you can get is my advice. If you don't take it then sooner or later the emerald ash borer will find it and all will die anyway. Yes, I speak with experience on this one.
