Well i'm back. I hope everybody here is well and had a great summer. I haven't looked around yet. It's been a very busy year. The TN 20 plus chimney etc. finally got installed and is ready for the first cold spell. Got some pics for you and wondering what you think. Our house is very tightly insulated. Closed cell spray foam throughout and the attic is part of the building envelop. Cutting that 1 square foot hole into the roof and leaving it open all around the pipe didn't make us happy. So here is what we did and hope it won't backfire Stainless steel plate caulked with high temp (2000 F) silicon in around chimney at roof level to close the hole. Then filled it in with 2 " ceramic fiber. We used Unistrut pieces to hold the pipe in place and the ceramic fiber. Then closed that with silicone boot and storm collar.
Looking good. How big is your new construction? I'm jealous of your insulation lol. I'd love to redo the walls of my 50 yr old rancher w 2-3" of closed cell. I have no idea whats in there now.
Hi BCB, The building is 30' x 50'. Right now it is still all open just started on studding the interior walls. The spray foam has been amazing during the summer. We ran one 1500 window A/C and that kept that whole building comfortable. I don't think it will be as good during the winter but it keeps the drafts out and that will help. Still have to install an outdoor air intake for the stove. Brenndatomu, I hope you are right. Still have install that gadget we got from you. I am a bit worried about the chimney height, we are on the side of a hill and the winds can be weird here. we'll see. Another worry is the space between the stainless steel closure and the silicone covers. There is no airflow it's totally sealed. I hope it doesn't just rust out from condensation. Locustpost, the waterhose wasn't needed, it's pooring today. So far so good.
At my old place I had 2" sprayed in the walls in 2 rooms and 3" in a crawl space and those rooms were the 2 most comfortable rooms in the house year round. I think you'll be surprised come winter.
Hope you are right. We are putting electric floor heat in some of the areas because the concrete is so cold.
