Hey all, I’ve been thinking on selling my Drolet tundra wood furnace. My plan is to sell that and then I’m looking to buy a outdoor wood boiler, I think the boiler would be better suited for my needs at the house and with a new son running around the house now I’d like to start keeping the wood mess outside. My question I have is how much do you guys think I could sell it for?

Be ready to have 3x the wood on hand to feed an outdoor boiler....

I can't remember...how old is yours? Is it cracked?
Mine is one of the early ones and is cracked...it will be welded by a certified high pressure steam welder before I sell it, but I was thinking $500 for mine (and it has some cool aftermarket electronic controls on it too)

What's your budget and how much heating demand do you have?

My house is about 1800 sq ft and that’s all I would be heating with it. I would be doing all the install myself, I’ve seen a few advertised online for around 4 to 5 thousand but I’m not sure if there any good

The cheaper ones are going to use more wood and make more smoke. If you OK with that, there's nothing wrong with going that route. If you want efficiency and a cleaner burn, you're probably in $7K - $8K territory for the burner, plus another $1K - $3K for pumps, heat exchangers, underground pipe, and fittings.

A lot of the manufacturers have a 100 series that would be more than enough to heat 1800 sq ft in KY.

I'm no boiler expert, but I have heard good things about Portage and Main, also Polar...and just recently there have been several Heatmasters come onto my radar (including Lukems) that people seem happy with (some of them have been installed for a while already) I'm sure there are others too. Central Boiler seems to have a spotty reputation...my dads has been fine for many years, but many people report short life and or bad warranty service...IDK.
Back at the end of August one of our local supply houses had a new Econburn ECB EBW100 on clearance for $2900! But those are "indoor" units too...

Portage and Maine bought out Polar. I read a lot of good things about some of the older units, but it seems their quality may be falling off as they grow the company. That's just this guy's opinion.

I was torn between a Heatmaster and a Crown Royal. Both stoves appear to be of the highest quality and share the same features. My decision came down to which dealer I was more comfortable dealing with...and that was Heatmaster.

My in-laws have a Crown Royal that has been an absolute mule for 5 or 6 years now....heating and providing DHW for 3 homes at the same time. Other than wear parts (refractory and door gaskets) it has been trouble-free after running umpteen gazillion cord of wood through it.

Have any of you all ever heard a company called ez Boilers they were originally called ridgewood stoves, they are based out of Michigan. They advertise a model called EZ classic which is rated for up to 5000 sq ft for just at $5,000. They seem to have pretty good reviews but don’t know much about the company.

I'd just keep running the tundra.

EZ boilers no where on their sight do they mention anything about epa compliance. That is a red flag.

This, is spot on. It is a huge warning about its efficiency.... I'm not joking about 3x the fuel.

I think some of these companys are gonna just keep going until they get caught and then shut 'er down.
I have read that some are listing their non compliant stuff as "coal burners" (exempt, so far) or as a "commercial" boiler, which apparently is exempt too?

The amish around here put their silage plastic in their OWB's if it burns they throw it in and stink up the area...... Local police have no power to stop them either.

I just got home from the UP yesterday and the OWB haze was just starting to set in.

In all seriousness, if you are doing this for your child, I'd think long and hard about the air quality in your yard if you go with a cheap OWB.

Where is your tundra located that it is a child concern?
