I live to cut again. The tree on the left: Notice the top wove between the other tree. The set up: Thought I had a good plan. Notch cut went well. Felling cut made. Went back and started pulling on it. Started coming just like planned. Don't you love it when a plan comes together. Then it stopped. Mini didn't have the power needed. Went back and deepened felling cut and then hung the bar up. Put tension on the tree and couldn't free the bar. Drove wedge in and got the saw out. Went up to the shop to get the truck battery dead. Strung out the extension cord to charge battery. 10 foot short. To Dollar General for another section of extension cord. Things sure went to pot in a hurry. Got the battery charged and hooked the truck up to the rope. Tree hit the ground. Black Locus Should make some fine burning.
Days like that suck! At least you made it thru unscathed. After all that I would split that tree into very small pieces and sacrifice it slowly to the hoarding gods.
Well practice makes perfect. I always try and use my truck for pulling and I have on occasion used both of my trucks. I was up in the mountains one time with the brother in law and he had his truck and trailer parked on a hill and was going to pull over this big spruce with his winch. What he did not count on was the tree was big enough it started pulling his truck and trailer down the hill so he let up. But by this time he broke enough of the holding wood on the tree to make it fall, but only in the wrong direction which was what we were trying to prevent in the first place. Lesson learned. I use my truck for now on. Black Locust good for you.
I really dislike those days. Yeah hanging a tree up in a Lodged situations sucks and makes me say far too many times, "Great now what am I going to do", but when one thing after another makes things difficult, it is far worse. Not to change the topic, but I noted your "mini". How do you like that machine? I was thinking that it might make for a nice set-up for me, one on tracks pulling my log loader trailer. That would give me tracks to get through the woods in mud and snow, but a smaller size then my tractor. Or I could go down to my gravel pit and load gravel by unhooking and using its bucket. With my log loader I could switch out to the bucket and do digging and such as well so I would have a loader on the front, and a backhoe/dump body on the back. Really a lot of options from a small package. But sometimes what I think it would do, might not actually work so well.
Love the Mini. Got a heck of a deal on it used and wouldn't sell it for twice what I have in it. I had cattle and a small barn when I bought it. It was perfect for cleaning manure. Sold the cattle and now use it for wood getting. Roll a few rounds into the bucket, pull it up to the splitter, roll a round onto the splitter and put the splits back in the bucket. Of to the stack we go. I love that it is a stand up. If I need a slight adjustment in position I am not having to climb into it like a full size.
I don't know about that. The tree was forked. This portion was the east fork. I skinned up the west fork when I was making the cut. Maybe the better punishment would be: Make firewood out of the west fork also. That would show the tree. I don't particularly like cutting live trees when I have ash to cut, but that would give me an excuse for more black locus. Black Locus is over 25% of my woods so I am not lacking for any Black Locus trees.
