It looks like the earliest I have started the OWB (for all winter) was 5 Oct 09. Once lit, it was going all year until May sometime. I don't record stop dates. I lit it for an overnight burn about a week ago but let it go out the next day. "Just to check out the operation...." (brrr would be more accurate) With the extended forecast highs only in the 40's, I really don't know what is holding me back!
Here in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas I don't usually fire mine up till mid November. It sits at the ready as we speak.
I can usually make it until November without a fire...this year is a little different animal. I'd love to burn mid-November to mid-March...but really it will probably be now thru mid-April.
I went ahead and lit mine. Supposed to get cold and windy tonight. Doubt the heat will kick on but we might as well get free showers tonight.
Not yet! Yesterday and today it was 80*. Will fire it up when it gets colder, haven't even had a frost yet! not that I am complaining.
Fired mine up Sept. 25th I think. Just cool enough to need a little heat & just cheap enough to not burn propane. Last few days been hot & sticky, but just let her idle. Supposed to get cooler now, so it's on for the season. No reason to cut wood if I'm not gonna be comfortable. Love my thermostats. Haven't had one for 15 years lol.
Mines been going for a month now. I have so much wood it'll probably rot before I can burn it all...I just wait until the weather is cool enough we don't have the windows open all day and I light her up. It'll be burning till June 1 at the earliest.
Its been way cooler than the norm here in Ohio, but I had hedged on it warming up a it again. So I gave her a once over, cleaned it up and loaded my kindling and bits and bobs to fire this past weekend.... then 60's all week happened lol. Its supposed be be cold this weekend so I am planning on getting her going Wednesday night to make sure everything is working right. This is only my 2nd season with the OWB, with wife and I working opposite shifts and me commuting 2 hours a day it didn't leave much time to get really ahead in firewood. I should have enough to get me through the winter and plenty of wood to get whenever I need just needs to be bucked and split. Hopefully I can start prepping for next year this winter.
