Well we have one buddy still cutting and splitting and we get our eggs from s coworker who's dad raises chicken and I think Chaz is still looking at doing some cutting and splitting. So do have options. I do want to say thank you to all who are contributing here. A lot of great ideas

Didn't know she was gonna start a thread on this.

I've some large pine rounds I have been thinking about doing some noodling on them and use that as well as wax.

Can get egg cartons all day long through a co-worker, complete with eggs

Guess she's sending me a "subtle" hint.

I figure since it's been sitting on the shop floor for 3 years, it's gooder to go.:picard:
No need for the MM at that point.

Chazsbetterhalf I made some firestarters a few years back.

The easiest way (opinion) is to use the cardboard egg cartons. I had mixed the sawdust into the melted wax and then spooned it into the cartons with not so much worry about overfilling or messing....(spelled missing). If I do it again, I think I'll pack the crton with sawdust first and then pour the melted wax into it. I guess the end result is the same.

For the wax, I used some old candles that were at a 2nd hand store. They were all white candles (non-colored) of different shapes sizes and condition. They were pretty much worthless to be used as candles but made a good source of wax for the starters. I don't know how much canning wax costs in comparison.

Pics when you undertake the project, right? Good luck!

I had some saw chips last year, and some noodles.... opted for cedar pet bedding. Huge bag for $7. Two of Fire Flake ‘s cupcake pans and some full size liners....
But some of the cedar chips were on the large side, so what would this mechanical designer do?
Well, why not convert the paper shredder into a cedar chip reducer?
Melt various old candles and marked down scent melts in a pot, pour off into an old Pyrex measuring cup and pour it to it. Stick outside in wintry temps.
15 minutes later, like popping out ice cubes from an ice tray.
And I never even took pics.

Meh, just throw a couple potato chips in, throw a match on em, done. Seriously, try it!
Doesn't work as well as a Super Cedar for getting larger stuff going, but chips work pretty well if you have some kindlin too...plus you can snack while you wait on the fire to build...

All this talk about melting wax. PLEASE use a double boiler to melt wax. Melting wax in a pot directly on a stove element is asking for a fire where you don't want a fire. The water in the bottom is more than hot enough to melt wax long enough so the whole candle or candles melt.

Exactly as I do Woodwidow . :dex:My old one developed a couple small pinholes in the bottom pan, so that one got tossed. I bought a new one.
It's nice and big, but pretty much impossible to pour from without the wax dribbling down the side of the pan.
I like the idea of a small crock pot, but not the idea of using a ladle.
