...the one I picked up today was an exceptional deal, it is near-mint, the guy was the original owner, didn't use the saw very often, and it came with a 36" West Germany Rollomatic E bar and chain in mint condition....

Nice score. These are my favorite Stihl. Very hard to find the 044/046 -064 066 models in well cared for condition here where I live. They got used/abused alot before the owl kicked all the fallers out of the woods. There is a beater 064 on local Craigslist that the guy wants 450$ for.

The 064 has a special place in my heart as well. It was my first "top cylinder" saw. I had several 041 and 041 Supers, but the 064 really had me hooked when I found one in Massachusetts years ago. I still have that one too, it's been shelved for quite a while because it needs new bearings and seals, which I plan on replacing as soon as my crankcase splitter arrives this week!

Waiting on definitive dave to get me a price on some parts for the other 064.

I think I'll name the 064 trio "The Three Amigos".....lol

Let us know how that case splitter works. I’ve been eyeing one for a while vs messing with brass and rubber hammers. Especially after a certain someone we know sent me an oops pic of an 044 crank end the other day blacksmith

Ps I like the name! You’ll have to get decals made for them!

Man, you did good Scotty Overkill !!!! I love my 064. First "big" saw I ever bought. Awesome power to weight & dead reliable. Getting a little hard to find some parts for those old dogs though.

Here’s the next question on tools.... what is there for pulling the Oiler worm gear?

Worm gear just pulls out by hand in most Stihl models.
Good find on those 064s. I haven’t seen many pop up locally in a few years. I own 3 and have most of the parts for another one... all built from bottom up.
The problem with the heat/hammer method to split cases is the temp needed to do it (hotter than you think). The bearings left on the crank can be problematic as well. That method was made popular by a now disgraced member on ope and AS... Case splitters are the way to go for saws in my experience. Heat helps when removing bearings from cases, though.

Guess I was thinking of a Dolmar I just took apart as far as the worm gear. Darn thing was pressed on the crank! I have a small puller and a valve spring tool that I didn’t have enough room to sneak the jaws in. Almost need something to thread on the gear and draw it off.

I am here. Yeah I got a little carried away with the hammer!:emb: It started out as love taps it was starting to come apart but then it stopped...... So I just started hitting it harder not realizing it. I am obviously no saw mechanic as of right now but I am getting better, just need to get a few more of the proper tools for the job.

Now I am in need of an 044 12mm crankshaft. The shaft is good I just busted a few small chunks off the very end that holds the e-clip on the end of the shaft for the sprocket/ drum. :headbang::headbang::hair:

Well, I'm late posting updates but I have the lesser 064 I recently bought rebuilt and ready to fire up, hopefully that will happen this evening.....

Thanks to Redfin for hooking me up with an oem cylinder, he worked over the exhaust and transfers, I did some work to the intake side. Installed a decent oem piston and new Caber rings, new piston pin and bearing, new clutch bearing, new crank seals and gaskets, an "Overkill Industries" dual port muffler and custom made tool steel bucking spikes, a new AM 3/4 wrap handle and west coast clutch cover.......
