Well I finally got a nice hookup with a tree service guy who gave me full access to his dump site and went today and cut some wood. Besides a couple of small local scrounges, this is the beginning of my hoard. We're hoping to get enough cut and split that we can start burning in a year or two. I don't even know what kind of wood this all is. Lots of splitting in store!
It'll be the sledge hammer and wedges and the Fiskars for a good long while.....my buddy has a splitter I can use when I get tuckered out.
If you have access to all that wood you could cut and split 6-7 cords and sell it and it would pay for the splitter! Gary
It looks like a great start for the dry wood plan. I hope you find a way to thank that tree service so it keeps providing. Nice score!
Looks like some decent btu's you picked up. Still work to be done Maybe post up some more pics if you're looking to ID some of that score.
Nice haul, and great for having a connection for getting it. you might take a maul with you and try to split some. be a shame to cut a whole bunch and bring it home and it's sweetgum or some forms of elm.
Very true. It would behoove you to start learning what's what so you can score the better btu's, but free is free
If you had a hydro splitter, I would say take it all. but if you are going to hand split it, Trying to split some wood will make you want to heat with gas again.lol
Looks like a nice score. I'm hesitant to i.d. that wood. The dark stuff looks nice. I say borrow your buddy's splitter. The rounds in the back yard could all be split in a day with a hydraulic if you had help.
If that was mine...I'd start with my saw on the little stuff and cut it to length and then with one or two whacks it'll split easy. The bigger stuff I'd save for the splitter. Although, I'm known to noodle the wood when I don't feeling like getting the splitter out. You can do a lot with a sharp chain and a decent saw.
Nice load. Few of those on weekend & you'll be a hoarder in no time Keep it coming & us updated with pictures Have fun You are well on your way now.
We had to split some on site just to be able to load them. There will be a bunch like that. I know we got some ash and a little dead elm. For free I just wanted to make it a load. This sight is 45 miles away so I want to make it count when I go. I need to learn to ID the good stuff. Here is a pic of the big stuff piled in the middle. I call these the untouchables as they're far bigger than I'm able to handle.
