I’d love to get into it! I haven’t bow hunted in a few years and would love to get back into it at a more traditional level. I’ve been target shooting with an old aluminum recurve that was my great gramps! Curious on any suggestions of set ups and pros and cons.

I have a recuvrve. Havent had any success with it. It was made by a local firefighter who has a small company.
Have no interest or patience for a compound. Seems like bragging rights for those are tales of missing the big one because the sighting pin was off.

If i go modern, it will be with a crossbow.

I hunted compound through high school and hung it up a few years back because of not having time. I think I’m going to save my pennies and search for a nice hand crafted longbow or recurve and start up again.

I've had both, long and recurve. Problem for me is the limited delivered kinetic energy Elk are tough, and our country is big. I've had to pass up too many shots with either. I will say this, the longbow is fun to shoot. For whitetail, I would probably go with the recurve. It is easier to manure around the woods.

That’s kind of the way I was leaning. Partially since I grew up learning on one. I’d only be useing for whitetail here we don’t have any big critters like elk.

Recurve bows are fun too. Upland birds like grouse use to be a favorite chase. We use to get porkies quite often while grouse hunting too. I'm getting a cross bow for decoy with dog calling. I know compound bows are far better than crossbows for anything over 40 yards. I just want one.

I used to shoot a Bear recurve when I was a kid. My son is getting into archery now that he has earned his archery merit badge through Boy Scouts, and I got him a recurve bow from October Mountain last year. Very nice bows for the money.

When I started archery it was before compounds. Never shot a longbow but know of some who do. One old friend (sadly we've sort of lost contact but do talk every now and then) shot long bows and still does. He likes to have someone throw aspirins and yes, he can hit them! He also gets a big kick out of hunting with it then dragging out a nice buck then seeing people's faces when they see what he shot it with. lol

My first recurve was a Ben Pearson but I've also had Wing, Bear, and many others. I still have a Bear for hunting and several target bows but sadly, my arms and shoulders just won't take that any more. But, I'm also 76 years old so not at strong as I used to be either.

One thing you can keep in mind Joe is that if you plan on shooting a recurve or longbow, you absolutely must take time to practice. It is best if you can shoot year around. I used to shoot in our basement for many years. Not a long shot but keeps the muscles used to the bow and also if you practice a lot, that bow feels like a part of you.

In addition, I never used a bow sight until I bought a compound in the late 70's. Still wish I could do that... Yes, I've shot a few deer with the recurve along with squirrels, partridge, rabbit, etc. Fun times!
