Honda Pioneer 700 would only be slightly more than a full sized Polaris 570 (new retail). It's a Honda.

My current two favs are the Kawisaki Mule Pro and the Kubota Sidekick. Both are around $14k new, depending on options. These two machines are more work than play, which is what my requirements are.

I think working in the woods with ruts and roots power steering would really be well worth it. My. Friend has a ranger and it really rides smooth.

A peak hp number from 38 to 44 hp is only 6hp. True, however look at the percentage of power difference. That's a 16% lower hp rating for similar weight. The other thing to remember is the real number that people will care about it's torque. While all the brands would rather go by peak hp, the engines torque and where it is and how the torque curve looks is far more important.

There's no way that a 425 cc single cylinder gas engine that is if similar design will make anywhere near the torque as an engine with 567 cc. That's nearly 250 cc's bigger.

I still think it's of that all the atv/ sxs manufacturers don't list tq ratings.

That had to have been the bigger engined HD8 800cc. For that price. Now comparing apples to apples, the ranger 900 xp is 12,400. Which is slightly more money than the lower spec defender can am. To get to that higher spec canam, it's about 15k.

If I were in the market for a work machine , I'd look at the twin cylinder machines. Ranger xp 900, Honda pioneer 700, and the can am defender hd8. I'd probably lean to the ranger. As a buyer, I look at features, cost, dealer support, and personal experience.

If you are going toward the lower cc machines, at 500cc, the ranger 500 and Honda pioneer 500 would get my vote over the canam with a 425 cc engine. One step up, in the sxs there's no can am between the 425 and the 800cc. Polaris has the 570 , Honda has the 700. There's Kawasaki mules as well, and the Yamahas as Viking 700 looks very nice as well. 12k for the Viking and it had a 3 yr warranty.

Bombardier had a step through 500 cc, the tractor. That was before they renamed the dirt-doo, a can-am. We nearly bought one for Dad, as he was having problems swinging his leg over the sportsman 500ho.

I dont own a sXs but have been researching/wanting one for over a year now. All the manufacturers mentioned are great really, it comes down to the deal you can find and what dealers are in your area.

I've been leaning heavily towards a Gator 625i or 825i, great sxs in my opinion. Im looking for one for about 85% utility use around my property, and 15% "play" - mostly ice fishing with some hunting/trail riding a few times a year.

The Ranger 570 is pretty much second on my list due to price, Ive seen them brand new for $8999.

The Deere dealer is about 15 minutes from my house as where Polaris is 45+ minutes...thats a big part of my decision making process. I bought a tractor where the dealer is 1.5 hrs from me while the Deere dealer is 15 minutes...Ive regretted that ever since.

Can-Ams are incredible machines but priced a bit higher than the comparable Polaris', at least in my area.

I dont think you can go wrong with any of the major manufacturers - go check a few out and find yourself the best deal!

There doesnt seem to be by me...Ive been keeping a very good eye on CL for about a year now. A sxs thats $9999 brand new people are asking $8500-$9000 for with 900 hours on it for example!

A lot of people put a few mods on them and expect to get that money back it seems. Personally if I'm not saving at least 40% Im not buying used.

Perhaps I should also add that power steering really comes in greatly when backing up, especially if you have something hooked on, like a trailer or splitter.

Most newer used stuff is like that around here.
It's because people finance it, they have it for a year six months and because they bought a new model at MSRP(havta buy new!) its worth less than what they owe on it because they only made a few payments.
The fall is a good time to buy, Atv or sxs.
    Sadly,Craigslist is becoming a joke.

Polaris is like harbor freight, cheap hit or miss and they remind me of harbor freight "compare to DeWalt" marketing schemes.

I think boat size(capacity) would dictate the machine as well. Dirt Ramp, pavement? Locking front differential comes to mind as well as curb weight.
Physical ailments as well. Some machines are easy to get into and more comfortable than others.

Personally the crew versions really suck, waaay too much rampover angle, get hung up constantly.

    A friend's neighbor has a 570 crew and it's janky.
It'd be more at home at a golf course.
Polaris ATV utvs are generally junk in comparison to the competition.
Are they horrible? No. But almost anything else will out work out play and out survive them.

Disagree on Honda, totally agree on the Kubota and mule. My neighbors have a sidekick, it's loud but they actually semi work it towing a brush hog.
Its not sporty at all but goes.

Bota unit is a 2-cylinder gasser...the new Sidekick. Recently learned that Subaru manufactures the engine for Kubota. I'm OK with that. Kubota reportedly owns the tooling used to make the engines.

Yeah...the Chery 3 cyl has had some issues. Would love to see Kawi develop their own engine for the Mule Pro. I really like the design/layout/features of their machine...but those Chery engines seem to be hit & miss.

I have a 2007 Polaris 700. We bought it brand new. It rides great but I have had a lot of whacky electrical issues. I used to eat up batteries. I replaced a computer module and now (sound of me knocking on wood over here) that seems to have resolved that issue. If I use 4wd or turn my lights on, my fuel gage flashes on and off. The gas gage is not reliable as it always reads much lower than it really is. I have issues with it idling too high which is a PITA when you want to shift from forward to reverse as it means you have to shut the engine off to do so since it's a centrifugal clutch type thing. As of recently, it has begun to run really rough as well. I need to bring it into the shop before the sap runs as we use it to haul sap out of the woods to the sugar house.

It was with the smaller engine ; somewhere around 500 cc. I checked with the dealer again since the book shows that the power steering is not available on that size unit, but he assured me it is.

I called the dealer yesterday and told him I would be down to test drive the 570 and then decide. He replied that a woman was in looking at it, got the numbers and told him she was going to the bank.

Well, now that the stage is set for that, we were on our way to the dealer and the cell rang...

    "Hello Dave?"

    "Yes"

"This is (dealer's name). I just want to let you know that I got a call from that woman I told you about and she is approved for financing and will be buying it................"

We were about 15 minutes away and are still laughing about it. Nothing like saving $9K in an afternoon.

Just like scavenger the search continues!

Boomstick the boat launch/recovery will happen only once a year at my cottage. Grass lawn-no approach or boat ramp, just launch it right where we go swimming all summer. I've been doing the same thing with my (now sold) sportsman 500 for over five years now.
