Welcome Bcbushman! It is sad to hear about all of this nonsense you guys are dealing with up there. Fortunately you have found the best forum on the interwebs in my opinion! You're gonna like this place! Dont be afraid to post some pics of your saw, wood pile, wood burning device, pets, etc. etc...... We love pictures around here:thumbs:

Realtime snap shot of renewables in New England.
Energy companies get a good bite in the wood burners.
Not as much as trash, probably because their not checking CL free section.

What’s up with wind? They’re using only 16% of the available supply? Is it because it’s more expensive? Just wondering or am I interpreting it wrong?

There up to 17% of the total Renewables! But if look below it's only 12% of the installed capacity.
I can't say why for sure, but there's a chit load of generation wind installed in Maine but the demand isn't high. If you all start cooking turkeys right now it would probably go up.

Well, our current governor hates alternative energy and pushes coal gas and oil like all the dinosaurs, but he’s gone soon thank the Lord and hopefully we’ll get someone a little more intelligent and way less willfully ignorant. I’d really like to see us more forward in that regard, we have lots of opportunity in solar and wind power. I tend to favor solar myself because it’s typically less intrusive and less expensive since the prices on it have dropped so much in the last decade. Most of our solar and wind power currently gets sold out of state to my knowledge and that’s just wrong when our electric rates are some of the highest in the country. If 50% of the homes and businesses in the state had their own solar panels we’d have lower rates if everyone was honest, and it could only get better from there.

Technically,we are taxed for our solar panels in the form if increase property valuation. Most or all gets exempted, but that can change in a heartbeat. Some can expire in ten years or less.

It's in your electric bill. The state mandates that transmition companies procure a certain percentage of renewables. And the state manages the solar program setting rates for power units. And the Transmition companies are required to buy it. That power cost is passed on to the customer in their monthly bill. While the traditional power producer is being paid in the neighborhood of $35/ Mega Watt Hr, solar developers are receiving $340/ MW Hr with an obligated customer and a very inexpensive maintenance and operational cost.
It plays heck with the whole sale market.

I don't have the option of natural gas on my side of kootenay lake. I use power for my hot water tank and lights. When you get a $1000 bimonthly power bill and you live an hour away from several hydroelectric dams it's very frustrating

Good lord. So a little over $2K/month. Obviously you've looked into the cost of a generator..like a real generator like a Magnum 10kWh or something equivalent. How did the cost of buying/running one compare to what you're paying now ? For the kind of money they're hammering you with (high, but I've heard numbers like this numerous times before), I'm pretty sure I'd be willing to bath in a tub over a fire, and use battery powered lanterns for light. LOL.

bi-monthly is a confusing/ambiguous term . It can mean two weeks or two months. Same with biweekly - twice a week or two weeks and in some payrolls is ten days (of work).

My uncle switched his house to all electric and electric heat when they built the Pilgrim Nuclear Plant because " it was going to make electricity real cheap " . He wanted to be first in line for that cheap power. I think we're still paying for some of the mistakes they made there to this day.

It would have been back in 2004 or 2005, while living in Burlington Ontario. My neighbor came over to my place and begged me to come and read his power meter for him. He had a hot tub, and had just put in a new pool. The pool heater was natural gas, and the pump was electric. He was holding a power bill for $1100 for 1 month. Even I thought, man, there's no way. I think my bills back then were around $150. His house was bigger, plus the hot tub and pool pump, but $1100 ? No way. I went over and confirmed that the previous reading was probably correct. From the date of the last reading, until I was reading it, about 3 weeks had passed, and he was about 3/4 of the way to getting another bill for about the same amount. We moved to Alberta in 2006, and I've owned 2 houses since then. Every single time, one of my main priorities was to get natural gas plumbed to every appliance possible. Burning wood to offset the gas bill is just a bonus. I'll be dammed if I'm going to ever tell the government or the utility company that I'm cheating them out of some of their energy extortion money by burning dead tree carcasses downstairs.
