I've been Mia during the hot weather and haven't done much afa firewood. I got into the woodpile for a while this evening and split some pignut hickory that I cut and piled up last fall. I have a pile of pignut and walnut that's close to a cord that I'll stack in the shed, ill probably burn the walnut this year and check the pignut and hold off on it until it's ready. I have quite a bit of firewood that's on the ground just needing to haul and stack and some other that needs split, hauled and stacked. I also have a couple dead trees to drop so I'll have plenty of work to keep me busy and I enjoy doing it during my favorite time of the year.
That's no lie. Maybe split between 1 and 2 cords this year so none to sell, but I'm still good for a couple/three years. Should try and get motivated this fall while it's nice out.
Apparently I’m not smart enough to wait till cooler weather. I like to cut and split when it’s cool but when I have a chance to catch up I will. We ran the generator so we could have a fan while using the splitter. The boys had friends help so I cooked a pork butt for afterwards.
I’m like you Ohio, I split when I can. Summers are generally a lot of my winter prep time. Never ran a fan before though! In the cold weather though I keep a burn barrel going next to the splitter. I just keep feeding it all the splitter scraps. Helps keep the mess at bay and keeps me warm! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I tried splitting some this summer early but I dont do well in heat and humidity and even worse in sun due to my bp meds. I really dont get near as much done as I'd like even when it's cool but being retired I have lots of time to do it.
I see a couple of us think alike, as I do both fan and burn barrel. I close enough to use a big extension cord for the fan, helps keep mosquitoes away too. As the ol sayin' goes, "Got to hit while the iron is hot"...we have been CSS for several weeks since the grass cutting has slowed down...even got the supervisor cooling it with the fan
Be nice if the rain would stay away so I could get more done now that it is cooler and the Texas blood suckers seem to be in remission. Light frost Friday night Sat got mower out promptly blew the deck belt ( new belt) tore that down, spindle went south ( likely because of rock that appeared out of nowhere) , got replacement parts and of course just a wee bit different as the mounting holes are 5/16 instead 13mm so the oem self tappers no workie. 5-16 is tap drill size for 3/8 NC so down at shop running tap through them- solves that hiccup. Course its been off and on raining for the last 14 or so hours. Did manage to get a bunch of ash split Fri. night before dark - but one piece took off and put a dent in the top of my foot nothing broken that I can tell but dang sore and a bit swollen of course - been worse. 6 Log cord, mixed hard wood, out back haven't touched yet. With the rain it's a bit gooey back there. kinda hard to see the scale but that pile is around 10 ft tall. Don't want to be slip sliding around when pulling logs off.
I worked an hour and half or so last night and about the same this morning and got the hickory split. I'll let it sit in the sun and wind a few days before stacking it in the shed. The bottom photo is my woodshed, previously a henhouse with some of the split hickory piled by the doors. This is my 1 man firewood operation lol. Next to the bottom pic is the pile of hickory and walnut. Next pic moving up is wood previously stacked in the shed the back row is mostly white oak.
I eased in a little harder than I planned. I got help from my grandsons and stacked all the split hickory in the shed. I wanted to leave it out to air in the wind and sun awhile but using the boys saved me a couple of hours.
I try not to do any firewood work until it cools off. That said, I did a lot more firewood work in Spring after it started to get warmer than the temps I usually work in. But, I got quite a load of silver maple logs delivered for free that needed to get processed and off my lawn.
