Another new stove thread from a newbie

    Thank you all for the responses. I'd love to hear from Scotty Overkill, but it sounds like my original plan is still the right choice. I'll still go I to it with an open mind, but I'm doubtful I'll be willing to settle.

    Canadian border VT, I did check the EPA spreadsheet, but they don't list the efficiency for any Napoleon stoves. The models I was looking at had a lot more emissions though.

    casualty, first if you put an @ in front of name it will be highlighted and sending notices so the person can find it.
    You have to be careful on the EPA, some of them run them with two by fours to get numbers. And some run them with cord wood to get numbers.
    I'm not trying to be a brand fanatic, but my experience tells me a lot of companies exaggerate burn times and heating capacity square footage. That is not the case or my experience with Woodstock.

    I can't speak for the Independence stoves, they're newer than ones that I have (I have a Napoleon 1900p and a Napoleon NZ3000).

    Both of which are pretty amazing non-cat woodstoves.

    At the end of the day, no matter what the EPA says about the stove you end up with, it's the WOOD that makes the biggest difference. Properly seasoned wood, properly maintained stoves, and properly installed/maintained flue systems are the biggest factors in efficiency. I don't care how efficient your stove manufacturer claims it is, if the wood isn't seasoned properly it's gonna be rough getting any efficiency out of it.

    Also keep in mind, OAK (outside air kits), reducing drafts in your home, and making sure the air system in your stove is tight and working properly will greatly aid in efficiency.

    I love my Woodstock Fireview. I rebuilt a mid-90s stove that I found on craigslist. My previous stove was a Regency I3100 insert which was non-cat. My wood consumption went down a lot with the cat stove. I can't do apple to apples since I didn't burn 24/7 last winter but I went from burning 4 cords w the insert (24/7) to about 1.3 cord (mostly pine) burning morning to night with the fireview. 2 reasons I didn't burn 24/7 last winter was not enough seasoned wood on hand (due to moving to a new house) and I now have natural gas baseboard heat which I don't mind kicking on overnight since it's not expensive to run compared to my old oil furnace.

    I wanted to get the IS (bigger firebox, higher heat output) but the stove's footprint wouldn't fit on my existing raised hearth without rebuilding it. The Fireview fits perfectly. The soapstone makes a big difference too. I know the IS has some soapstone but I'm not sure how it feels compared an all cast stove or a surrounded stove like the fireview.

    Another thing I really like is Woodstock's customer service. Like I mentioned, my stove is 23 years old and an older version than what's currently produced, but Woodstock still has the parts to keep the stove in service and running like new.

    That said I don't know anything about Napoleon stoves.
