Has anyone in Maine ever got a permit to cut wood in National Forests? I can only find reference to the White Mountain area but nowhere else in the State
Dont know if this will help ya or not..... Maine The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands offers firewood permits to individuals with a chain saw and pickup truck. Foresters mark suitable firewood trees near roads, for easier hauling and minimal disruption deeper into the forest. Firewood is sold for $30 per cord, with a 5-10 cord maximum for any one permit holder each year (this varies by region). Call the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands at 207-941-4412 for more information.
Yeah ,I saw that at one point. Seems kinda pricey actually when you can get it for about that price privately without the rules. I was curious if anyone had done it. I know some guy's that get permits on private lots for $10 a cord by Moosehead
Here in PA...permits to cut in state forest cost 20.00 a cord..you have 10 days to ge it...plus other regs. Real pain in the @ss
Boy I feel lucky. Here where I live in N. AZ I can get a permit for $5 a cord ($20 minimum) and I can cut April through Dec. One forest over the minimum is still $20 but they let you have 10 cords for that. Comes with some conditions but they are very reasonable.
Is this a DCNR thing or who do you have to talk to for a permit? I have a bunch of stuff down on state ground right off of the road I live on that has been bugging me for a while. It would be easy to get. Almost easy enough to grab and no one would ever notice it was gone whether I had a permit or not.....
Yes it is. Greenwood State Park is right down the road but I didn't know if they had anything to do with it or not.
Been there done that. Nice big red oak about 70 feet over my property line. Looked at it laying there for 4 years. Not on the ground just a blow over. Did I say how nice and big it was? Nice long straight trunk. Just laying there,,,lonely. I had to bring it home. It was the right thing to do. State wouldn’t bother me for it most likely anyway. Used to be our property before it was theirs and I haven’t seen a ranger in 25 years. Just last week I walked back there again. Standing dead white oaks all over the place. Even in groups they seemed awful lonely.
I have a nice big white oak that snapped about 8' up during the Halloween windstorm we got last year. It's about 100 yards from the back of the house on conservation land. It's going to find it's way down here this fall.
I fully understand your desire. I also have a tract of conservation land near my woodlot. Many dead white oaks standing on it. Gypsy moths. Was thinking exactly the same thing. Then I thought, wait a minute here,,,,conservation land is run and administered by tree hugger types. If I were to get caught harvesting by tree hugger types they would be more likely to take me to civil court seeking monetary damages. The state forest is safer. At worst a ranger would wag his finger at me and say stop. Just one tree,,,,,,,no one should get worked up about that. I’m looking at a forest full of dead standing that until recently was part of my family’s land. Sort of ticking me off. I have plenty of wood so there’s no reason to covet those trees. Just a shame to watch them rot tho. Anyway just a perspective to consider.
At first I misunderstood pricey part, I thought to myself $30 a cord isn't bad!! But didn't even think of looking at private land lots. I suppose that is much more common up North, but it gives me the idea to look around my area for that. Our state forests do this as well I looked it up this past Friday, was $20 for a cord, max 5 cords.
For comparison, a landowner around here will receive only $9/cord for standing hardwood firewood from a commercial harvest.
I've thought the same thing in the past. Perhaps it might be a good idea to approach the conversation committee and ask.
If trees are on State Park property, I believe they (Greenwood SP) can issue a fuelwood permit, if on state forest land, check with Rothrock headquarters in Huntingdon. 814-643-2340. There is also a state forest, or used to be, maintenance shed just east of the park where Rag Hollow road cuts off, they might be able to help you and or even issue fuelwood permit.
