Wood scrounging is looking up. Thought I was done scrounging for this year ( my first year of scrounging) but sometimes an offer comes up that can’t be refused. Saw an add on FB for free firewood $10,000. Turns out the guy just put that there for fun. A field full of rounds and some piles of splits. All free just take whatever you want.
Looks like someone was in the firewood biz and just stopped. Some looks a little old but the splits are just turning grey.
We will see what we see when we see what we see.
Hopefully there’s not a mob bar brawl going on when I get there,,,,,bright and early.

But of course. Hoping the pics are recent and the spoils are unspoiled. Those splits would be awesome. At least the top layers. Might even be able to burn some this year. I have lots of future wood but it’s going to be tight this year. I’ll grab some rounds if I have to but I have quite a bit to process already.
I’m definitely three years ahead in quantity but not in drying. :)

I tried Wolverine. Won’t let me post a picture of a screenshot. Security error keeps dumping it.

Try right click, then "save as" on the pic.
Then post the pic from your saved location.

    Using an IPad.
Have posted a screenshot off FB before. This one doesn’t seem to be friends with the forum.
    Makes me wonder.

Sure hope the splits pan out for you. Sounds like it could be a win fall of burnable BTU's

Wood hoarding gone awry. One several levels. What a day. Good for some jaw dropping and then some laughs.
Turns out it’s an abandoned house. A $400,000-$500,000 house back in its prime. Actually probably more in it’s prime.
Well whoever lived there was woodhoarder extroidinaire. I guesstimate there was at least 100 cord of wood on the property. Everywhere you went there was wood. Mostly big rounds. I went for the splits. 20-30 cord of splits there. I’ll post that pick first. It doesn’t look like much until you climb to the top and realize he tossed splits down a hill and filled it up. The pic is just the top of the mountain :)

Not designer fire wood by any means. Doesn’t seem he was trying to sell it. Also seems it was all split with an axe or maul. Many pieces had been split but not fully all the way through. All different lengths. Looks as if it were all scrounge wood brought home in a minivan. How some of those rounds fit in a minivan I’m not sure. Got the impression procuring the wood was the only important thing. Processing it nicely or stacking was not a concern.

Hard to tell but that pic above is just a pile of rounds all the way back to that little caretakers shack. And all around it also. Just a path to get to the place. All the pics are hard to tell just how much wood is there.
And here’s the poor house that was obviously not of any concern to the owner. This is nice neighborhood in one of the poshest towns in central Ct. Many homes on this street are well over a million, some 2 or 3.
Back of the house. Roof is shot. Black mold on the walls inside. I didn’t bother going in. Not my business. upload_2018-9-23_13-9-33.jpeg

Ok, here comes the funny part,,,,and the reason I have no pics of the three trailer loads I took out of there.
Just pulling up out of the backyard towards the road and two cruisers come whipping in. The wood police come storming over armed with peaveys and picaroons. Only kidding, most likely nine millimeters. Seems one of the neighbors called the fuzz.
So we begin a lengthy discussion about who owns the house, why we’re there. Hand over the license. Then we show the FB add with the guys FB name. Show the conversation we had the night before. Cops call the number, no answer. Questioned us for awhile, don’t blame them, it’s their job to figure out what’s going on. One cop says he might come back for some :)
I told them I’m coming back unless they can determine I shouldn’t. Gave them my number and they promised to call if anything was hincky.
Within five minutes my sister got an auto message from FB that the add was removed :)
I received no call from the cops so we went back twice more. No idea who this guy is but one things for certain. No ones going to use all that wood. Not in that town. Someone whoever, however, whatever’s going on is going to pay a lot of money to have it brought to a dump.
Figured I’d rescue a little before that.
I might even go back tomorrow. The neighbors must be accustomed to me now.

Thought of that. A younger guy by checking his FB profile. Owns a landscaping business somewhere. Couldn’t catch all the conversation going on amongst the police and they never offer info. Did tell me it was an old guy that collected all that wood with the minivan parked out back. Obviously not their first time there as the sliding doors are broken out.

To be honest I was shocked one of the neighbors would call the cops for someone removing any of that wood ;) it is definately a blight on the neighborhood.
Someone still cares a little. There was an outside light on which means someone is paying the electric bill. Still no call from the cops though.

Hahaha anyone else shows up and they probably won’t have the add or conversation to show the cops.
Dey be splainin a long time Lucy.
There was one young guy that showed up also. Just grabbed a small truckload of wood for his campfire. From out of state, living year round in a campground, here for work. If he’s smart he’ll come back with the prices they charge for wood.

That is a crazy story! I'm glad the cops didn't run you off. Whoever called them might have been assuming you were breaking into the house. Now the police have come and gone, you can probably go back without anyone raising the alarm. I'd get as many splits as you can manage!

Yep, just piled all the tulip wood I had brought in previously. The three loads we got today are going into my moms basement. Now I have room in mine and my sister is gonna want some. We just might not have to dip into any of our own stash this year.
Shame really because there are some piles I want moved and gone and there’s no way I’m moving wood for no reason.
I guess things could be worse ;)

Nice opportunity and story. Thanks for sharing!

I'd keep going back and getting as much as i could, until I tire of it, run out of storage, or am told to not return.

    Go get it!

Who was this mythical man with all of this wood? Was he the first ever true wood hoarder? Did he start the club before any of us ever knew about it? Perhaps we will never know.......
