First day of fall and cooler weather made for a great day of hauling a load of oak. Trailer was maxed out, but I didn't want to make another trip.
Yup. Small fire in the stove this morning. Still burning off a summer of non-burning, with a couple of windows open to chase out first burn scent. Rack brought up to the deck. Ash bucket in place, with kindling/stick bucket full. Care taken to make sure of door swing clearance. Wood is mostly sasafrass, swamp maple. Good enough for shoulder season. Wood stove is just a few steps through the door. I'll cover it later today. Had a mouse looking back at me when I uncovered that wood rack. Sorry, pal. Tossed the nest aside without a second thought.
Dang, I miss some oak. Mostly softwood here, white spruce mostly. Have had overnight fires at least a month now.
Great summer, nice and mild temps Normal highs are mid 70’s. We typically have one week in July that gets upper 80’s to mid 90’s. As always too short! Was so busy I did not get to fish.
Well, we don't like the upper 80's and mid 90's here. I usually don't mind temperature in the 80's up to about 84 but if the dewpoint gets over 65 then it becomes a bit to much for me. And this year we've had a lot of days with dewpoints in the 70's. That's when I do very little other than staying in the air conditioning. We normally have 6 days per summer with temperature of 90 or above. This year? 19 days of 90 or above. Terrible. Ugly. Needless to say, we ran our air conditioning much more this year than we ever have. On a normal year we will run it from maybe 4 to 10 times. I lost count this year. But, most times when we run the air we can shut it off at night so that is a blessing. But we probably had maybe 10 nights when we did run it. I thought much about northern MI and yes, even Alaska.
Come on up. We are fortunate that the nights cool off well. We haven’t had the nasty colder than -50* for weeks on end since 12/13. Seems it’s less than a month of that. Seems like more than half as much in the last five years as previous. The bad about where I live is no sales tax, no property tax, ground water is glacial aquifer. Salmon and trout fishing is not far away, caribou and moose are close. Sheep is not to far, ocean and her bounty are less than 8 hours away. It’s a love/hate place, seems to be about 20% stay and the rest go back. The outdoors folks seem to do well and the ones who like the thought of Alaska and the outdoors don’t make the first year.
That's good though that you don't get much of the -50. I've only experienced that twice and that was plenty. The bad? If that is bad, pinch me! Sounds about what one would expect. Sounds good but when we got there it was not so good. There are many who would fit that description.
I was waiting on your responds. If you are located where I think you are, Tok area, I was close to you by Alaskan standards, the last 2 weeks of June. Fishing Tangle river and lake. Water high, ice out a week or so before and snow still on the side of the road. I love Alaska. I would move up there in a heart beat, but my wife hates your state. I been there 9 times and her 3. If I am going she says she would rather stay at home. Alright with me. More time to fish.
I am out of Tok, I know about Tangle river and lake area. Yes sir, we had snow by the office @4000 feet the did not melt until the middle of July.
