Wood ID

anyone have a clue what this stuff is?

 

Looks like fresh cut mulberry.

 

That's what I was thinkin' too, but it just look like red wood. Not Redwood.
I thought Cedar for a second, but the bark is way wrong.

 

Thanks. Hmm, I’ve never seen one. Never ate one. I think dear old Mom is gonna get a talking too. LOL
So it’s a pretty good wood but about 50 minutes away. Not worth the trip. I just never saw a wood so solid and red like that.

 

Mulberry is great, not good, firewood.

 

Looks like mulberry that was cut a while ago. Fresh cut is pretty yellow, like this.

 

Well if it ages that red it’s probably great for woodturning projects.
Yes, better than oak for burning. I just have so much wood right now I can’t see going that far for it. Sure looks interesting tho.

 

Yes...it seasons a deep red. I love mulberry, wish I had more of it.

 

So where is this wood being offered? That will be a great load for somebody.

Woody nailed it. I have about 2 cords of mulberry seasoning. It goes from yellow to red. It's sparks a lot when burning which is fun to watch.

 

I think it was Southington. I’ll see if I can track down that add.

 

Fresh cut mulberry I've seen is yellow, then ages to red.

If it is fresh cut and reddish/brown, I'd change my vote from mulberry to something else, possibly elm.. (which I'd let rot).
Here is a pic I took, the red/brown looking rounds are elm. Maybe their camera was off in color? At any rate, as mentioned, I too love mulberry for farwood!

 

Seems to be gone already. That’s rare that someone took their post down. Usually your looking at pics of wood that were picked up a year ago.

 

Thanks for the follow up. That would have only been about 20 minutes away. Probably just as well because I’m having trouble figuring out where to put the wood I’m picking up now.

Wager a bet that your roof gets sunlight, wind and has nothing on it but shingles. Time to step up man, way up LOL

 

House roof? Well that at least has tar paper. And I’m lucky enough to have solar panels on the south side of the roof. But a wood shed roof? That’s a different story. Yup, definitely need a wood shed! 15 cord on a .4 acre corner lot in a suburban neighborhood can be a little tough to pull off at times. I figure if I had a shed that could hold at least 5 cords of dry wood for the upcoming winter, that would give me some more yard real estate to work with.

15 cord on .4 is really pushing it. You must do the processing on your roof.
Do you have an efficient stove? Maybe that’s something to consider? Saw a world of difference switching to my Woodstock PH.

 

I have an Enviro Kodiak 1700 insert. It’s a tube stove; about 5 or 6 years old. We are heating a 2,000+ sf colonial with it. I’m not quite ready to buy a new stove yet. This is only my first one!
