I have a 2010 2500 dodge ram. I figure it is only a matter of time before the back window takes an impact from a tossed split. Anyone have a back rack or headache rack that has held up well ie. Not rusted and does not obscure the rear view and easy to install. Thanks!

Have you looked on CL yet? Most of the headache racks that I see are home-made/fabricated. Oilfield trucks. I would think it'd be easy to find one for a full size Dodge.

Dunno if this would fit your truck, but there are others listed as well. Search term: Headache Rack

I have buddies who have had them on trucks, but again all were fabbed, not store bought...and they would probably be the only thing left of the truck in a catastrophic wreck. Many choose to create a 'box' pattern, running down the tops and sides of bedrails to hook into the rear supports that run up both sides inside the tailgate. 2x2 square stock is the preferred material for the racks themselves.

Look/ask around...I bet you can get a good deal on a used one. Most oilfield trucks don't seem to survive much past 7-8 years.

Best to make your own if possible need to have the open areas pretty small or use expanded metal panels with adequate support so a corner of a split can't reach the glass - I have busted out one yet- been some close calls though. I did crack the center panel on one truck ( corner of a split made it past) -haven't attemped to find a replacement yet. I do not need the whole window ($$$) .

I always make my own from expanded steel. Grind it downs a little and paint it black. I build pressure treated wooden side racks too to double the bed capacity of the truck. Something like this, I'll see if I can find a picture of the headache rack section. Pressure treated wood for stake pockets you can get free at Lowes, the pressure treated lumber comes on it and they throw them away. They work great for making the stake pocket stakes.

I have a Backrack brand on my Silverado. It is really well-made and not terribly expensive.

I was looking at back rack brand and because they are inexpensive I was hesitant. That is good to know.
