A guy is selling a brunks model 535 13 ton 5 hp briggs engine splitter for 750. I'm going to see if he will sweeten the price up some since I can purchase a new 25 ton for only 150 more and get a warranty. What would you good people consider a fair price for a splitter like this? I did a quick search and didn't find any information on these. But I'm on my lunch so I have to get back to work. Thought I'd ask here, maybe someone has used one in the past? I'm hoping the 13 ton is a conservative number, he claims he has split large logs with it. It's been sitting for a few years as well. Should I be concerned about hydraulic seals? I hope the carb is ok but that's cheaper than replacing seals or a cylinder. Thanks.
Never heard of that one but for sure I would not go that high. I probably would not go over $300 and probably not even that high. The trouble is when they are old things can go wrong all the time. Spend time and dollars fixing would make you wonder. As stated, you can buy one about double the size for another $150
I would DEFINITELY want to see it run and cycle a few times. Yes that is way to much for an older splitter. My dad bought a 25 ton Yard Machine for $500 used to split one tree. We have had it since '99, I think. Still running, original 6HP B/S engine on it. See what he will come down to. No more than $400-450, I would think...maybe this helps.
I am always amazed at what people are asking for used splitters!....as a whole......I guess they are getting it? Most of them look like they went thru hell n back...
IMO, he needs to come way way down $300 - $400 range depending on age/condition. $750 for a used 13ton, like you said you can buy brand spanking new w/ a warranty for $899. Agreed bear 1998 , I look all the time on CL for splitters and it's amazing how high these guys list them,and they are beat up and rusted, when for another $100 or $150 you can buy brand spanking new.
Bring a printout of a splitter that's being sold nearby to show him how out of range he is. Seeing it will carry more wright than just hearing it.
Thank you everyone for your responses, You are inline with how I was thinking as well. Although I felt if I offered 400 he'd be insulted so I may just pass. It's ridiculous with what people are asking for their used splitters around here. A guy is selling a 22 ton huskee for more than the 25 ton countylines. How many years ago did they stop selling those? 4? I was kind of hoping the 13 ton was a very conservative rating, being it is an older machine. It can't do vertical either which I kind of need for some of the rounds I have been holding off on and I come across.
If you like it well just go ahead and politely insult him. Some people don't have a clue as to the actual value.
Very true, I am as polite as can be but if the listing does not say "FIRM" or "NO LOW BALL OFFERS" then it's fair game.
It's not only there....its everywhere...if ya get a chance...google... all of craiglist... enter log splitters...then you'll see....
If you can swing the extra $150 from the stated price, my advice would be to just bite the bullet and buy new. Fewer hassles and vertical to boot, + a warranty.
Sounds like the Didier splitter of my buddy's that I use. Post up a picture. I know Didier rebranded then and some these all over the place. I'll look and see what google says. If it's like ours, it's a solid piece of equipment. But not at that price when you can buy a new one for a little more. Keep in mind that the new ones are not built the same as they used to be.

here is a link easier than copying the pictures and reposting. Log Splitter best I came up with was they may have been made a little south of me in a town called salem. They make stoves as well from what I understand but I didn't dig too deeply.
Lets see buy the used splitter for $750.00 have to replace engine, hydraulic cylinder, hydraulic valve, and hoses. you will be well over the price of a new 22 ton or bigger splitter. Keep watch for sales at TSC, or one of the other stores or check the internet.
Ok, it's different than the Didier, but similar enough in construction. It looks robust as well. Back to the construction of the older splitters. The Didier we have is so we'll built, that except for a couple lost or broken bolts, the majority of the supplier is original. Yes, the old Briggs 5hp went out after 30+ years. Lol. A Predator was $100, and bolted right up. Nothing else really has needed to be changed. The MTD vertical/horizontal one we have is the same one as Dennis's. The MTD is built nowhere near as well as the Didier.
That's what our Didier was bought for a few years ago. The seller may not want to hear it, but that's the right price.
