I have a ported 026, I ran a 3/8 7T on it for a short while and quickly went back to.325 8T. I had to be more gentle with the 3/8 where I could push a .325 harder. Either way send it to Kevin to add some sausage to it, until then open the muffler and enjoy it.
If you are dead set on running 3/8 you may as well change over to say a a 16 inch bar. With a roller tip you will be replacing the bar anyway and that smallish engine will do better with a shorter bar.
Definitely get that 261 and send it to Huskihl he ported mine this past winter. Also have a 026 that he did, that man has talent working on saws.
Hey Rope good answer since I just had Armbru84 drop two of my saws off to Kevin. I'm pretty excited to see what I get back.
It’s not the tooth count that makes it pull harder/faster. It’s the outer diameter of the sprocket. Stihl “mini” sprocket sizes (for saws 50cc and under) here. 50cc CHAIN shoot out - 3 Bars, 3 Chains, 5 Sprockets, and 1 Saw.
To weigh in on this topic late, I run 3/8 .050 gauge on my 026's & up. I've not tried anything longer than 16" bar & 7pin rims on them. I think even the 261 would lack some power at 20".
I run 20” stihl light bars and square grind on both 026 and 261. I cut dry spruce and hardly any white birch. I don’t see any negative effects for my application, your mileage may vary. I would have to find my notes but I think Huskihl has my saws running at 15,500 to 16,000 rpm. If you have a 20” bar give it a go.
Ran my huskihl ported 261 it was 51* and maxed @14,657 and was at 13,340in the cut. Was some 8-10” fire killed spruce. She runs faster the colder it is she’s tuned in the 15k+ at -30*+. Bo send it to Kevin when you get it. I am more impressed every time I run the 261 badness.
What are you using to measure RPM? I bought a cheap laser tachometer thing that doesn’t seem to wanna work for me.
Workconnection. Mine came set up for four stroke, had to read the directions to get it to the two stroke mode. Tach/Hour Meters
I put a 20" 3/8 setup on my 550xp a while back. The extra reach was nice, but the loss of power was too great for me. Back to .325/18". Thankfully, the chains also fit my 2166, so now I just have a small mount 20" bar that doesn't get used.
I have a stock MS260 with the standard 0.325 chain on a 20" bar and it cuts nice. I cut tons of oak with it anyway.
