How the Gifford Pinchot National Forest measures firewood

I apologize if there is a better place for this or a prior thread. On my trip to the high country in Washington State this week I stopped by the Gifford Pinchot National Forest Ranger Station to inquire about firewood permits. Not that I need more firewood, but if we camp during elk season it is nice to have the permit for keeping the wall tent stove going! What caught my eye was the way that the Forest service calculates wood volume as related to truck sizes. For those who have wondered how much wood in a small pickup, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, bed high, cab high, etc. Here is how the National Forest People in WA State weigh in on the matter. It could be a handy guide for future use! Their wood tags are good for 1/2 cord or any portion thereof. Calculations are stacked loads with some sort of factor for wheel wells subtracted.

So true! They don't list a Toyota Corolla or a minivan either. Also no Volvo station wagon!

That's pretty nice. Load tickets in the NF where I cut are also each good for a half cord. But this is all they provide for truck reference. If I fill my T100 to the top of the racks, which is rare, I'm right at a half cord.

 

Measurements sound about right. If I fill my six foot bed with rounds up to the top of the cab it nets about 3/4 cord. I like to make liberal use of straps for that kind of load.

I have had a forest ranger tell me that you do not need a permit to cut or gather camp wood. He just said as long as you don't leave the forest boundaries you are good to go. I live in Oregon but I don't think it matters. Our forest gives out the same silly load guidelines that are in the post above.

Drew It up with my CAD drawing/cutting software. Have at it for a logo! I should cut one out and send it to Headquarters for an award ceremony at the next GTG you folks have back east. We could indeed call it the " Midwinter " award if she is willing. What would be the criteria for bestowing it?

 

"Most time wasted chasing firewood instead of doing more important things" would have to be part of it.
