Not sure I've ever mentioned it, but I hate yellow-jackets. So, I moved all my Black Walnut boards into the trailer/workshop yesterday, cleaned off the porch deck, and started on deconstruction. Well, I got partway done when I noticed that the YJ nest (that I sprayed) wasn't in the extinct phase of existence. So, I've sprayed it 3 times including once today, I knocked it down last evening. I'll be darned if there still isn't at least 7 of the bastages still swarming over there. Not allergic thankfully, but I don't need/want to get stung a bunch. At any rate, here's what I got so far. They used a lot of nails for the second layer of decking. If it weren't for the "frogs-foot", I'd have never gotten as far as I did. It's a common tool for roofers, used to rip off shingles and decking. I intend to get rid of the porch, and hopefully get some covering on the back and front, then it will be winter storage for the tractor and some other goodies.
Go out about midnight, they’ll all be in their hole in the ground. Pour some gasoline down the hole, that should solve things. Good luck! I hate those things.
They had a paper nest in the roof rafter. A bit bigger than a softball. But yes, I've gotten rid of groundbees and YJ's in that exact manner. Had some nest under my old truck hood once, got stung just above and below my eye. Talk about being madder than a hornet. None survived that day.
Glad you’ve got that far on the project Chaz The ones I really hate are those Bald Faced sons of Killed at least ten this week on the back deck as they try to eat some of the spindle and handrail wood.... They got swatted with my hat, knocked down to the deck, squashed with extreme prejudice.
Thx Eric VW I hope to finish off that deck/porch soon. What with all the we did in August, I'm hoping to squeeze out a few nickels for siding. Have never seen many of the bald-faced around, but I'm sure they're here somewhere. And yes.. Booyah.
I bought a couple cans of that foam spray for this summer.... I got into some red and black ones this summer... they were pretty aggressive...
I used the "Spectricide" foam, an entire can between the 3 sprayings. On the good side, only saw one hovering around this evening.
I haven't had a yellow jacket encounter for about 16 years, and the last time is the most memorable. Grabbed a bale off the baler, and sure as chit we baled up a whole mess of them mudda flockers and I was in the wagon with the rack and the bail out hole was covered. Some how they ignored the mower and the rake, but they had revenge on me when the baler came around.. They must die!!
That musta been one helluva chitty day. Did hay when I was young, and always ended up in the loft. The heat always bothered me more than the YJ's or mud-wasps. They fortunately seemed to ignore me for the most part. I guess I've become less tolerant of stinging/biting critters over the years. They didn't swarm me, but I wasn't giving them an opportunity either.
It was, I bailed off the front with a prayer i wouldn't trip. Took my.grandfather a minute to figure out what exactly happened as i was booking it. I saw some evidence of a.ground nest this year in the corner of my yard and there was a midnight torching party. Neighbors have been a little Leary ever since, I dunno why tho, it was an impressive fire ball.
you do even better if you don't light the fuel. The fuel is what really kills them. If you burn it off, there will be many missed below ground.

Oh no no, none were missed, a confiscated super soaker ensured the proper amount of excellerent was added at the correct times to ensure proper disposal of said demons were ridded from the premises. In hind sight, it was a well calculated hold my beer and watch this moment that worked and I'm telling you about it(not saying try it). But really the new renters next door haven't said a word to me since, lol.
Which one? This was a hot Fireball from 4 years ago. Huge nest on the shed by my barn. Just one week before the fall GTG I hosted. So me and my son had to take car of it before y'all came over. Or the other Fireball?? Shawn Curry gave me a sweet sticker and I found a nice spot on my 400ex for it.
I have a video of my son Logan and I driving up to it and spraying it with a couple different cans while poking a hole in the epicenter of their world and spraying there as well! I'll see if I can find it.
I think they get nasty this time of year nearing fall and sourcing food. We have a few grape vines and most of the grapes fell and they are all over the place. The YJ get half-soused on the fermenting fruit, adding to the orneriness. I was having a new electric service put in and there was a YJ nest right under the clapboards where they were working. They had to shut down for the day. I set up the shop vac at the hole entrance and collected most of them in three hours. On the other side of the house, they were under the porch. I did the same and two days later no activity. There is a tipping point where if most of the workers are removed, they can't support the nest any longer and it is abandoned. Keep us posted on the porch project.
