Firefighter’s post from yesterday “Admiring my firewood” and the ensuing responses prompted me to post this. (I admire mine too, and can see stacks from almost every window in the house.) I cut not only on my own property, but on state land where my hunting cabin is, at our family farm, right of ways, and various other places when an opportunity arises. I am 4 years ahead with about 18 cords CSS in various places around my home and sheds, and I can tell you the trees and location each stack came from. Sometimes in the winter when burning, my girlfriend gives me a test “where did this piece come from” and 99% of the time, I can tell her. Can’t remember what I did 3 days ago, but know exactly where that rank of Red oak came from I cut 3 years ago. Anyone else so afflicted?
Yep.....I'm so bad I'll see certain splits of wood in the stacks when I'm hauling wood into the garage in the winter that I remember splitting or cutting them. I've even gone so far as to stash a beer bottle here and there in the stacks while I'm processing, when I find those bottles in the middle of the cold winter while hauling in wood, I can smile remembering how hot it was or what I was doing that day that the wood was split and stacked several years earlier... I guess I've got it pretty bad, Eh?
I would say I could go close to this affliction. I doubt that I could remember every single split, I certainly can remember where each load came from. Especially the rarer species in my stacks. Like the River Red gum, Sugar gum and the more recently added Oak. I'm not sure what sort of Oak it is but I can't wait to find out how it compares to our native wood. In 2 1/2 years I guess I will find out! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I most definitely used to be that way and still am at least a little bit but as I age the memory seems to be slipping a little. That and the fact that for the last 3 years we've had a gtg here and they guys have done a fantastic job of bucking up wood, splitting it and even some stacking. Not a lot of felling has been done but there definitely has been some. These guys are great and the help has been greatly appreciated as the last few years it has been a bit harder for me to get things done. I've definitely noticed after I hit 70 years old that I've slowed down a lot.
I know where every chunk of my fire wood came from. Of course owning my own place and the ESB killing about 70% of the trees in my woods that is where it comes from. I do how ever get a call from this friend non wood burner or another a tree came down in a storm. Or a friend of a friend will call a big branch came down. I did once have a friend of a friend call they had some fire wood. They had bundles tied up with twine small tree branches they had picked up in the yard. Looked much like thr pictures you see some times of some one in Eroupe carrying such a bundle. Al
I can tell you where most every stick came from as well. Though, theres 3 cords of ash all together, and it came from 4 different spots, but I could tell you all of em, and looking at the yard and remembering how it was stacked, I could get pretty close to identifying by location.
Yep, same here, where it came from, how it split, if I trashed a chain that day etc. Just the way it is.
