Early this year a close by neighbor, (next farm down the highway), went out just before bedtime to load his outside furnace with wood for the night. He ended up taking a flip on the ice landing on his shoulder, shattering same. Part of the fractured collar bone went inward and crushed his spine. rendering him a quadriplegic. This is a very hard working individual, who aside from farming, also had a sawmill and firewood business running from the farm as well. He went from strong and able-bodied to truly paralyzed in the matter of a instant.

He was in the hospital the balance of the winter and most of the spring. He was then sent home, and had made some progress with movement in his hands by the time he went home. Everyone was hoping for the best.

About a month and a half ago, I took a trailer load of hay over to their farm. While waiting for one of his son's to get the load off, his wife came out for a visit. We were sitting on a lumber pile talking about how things were going. She advised me that he was quite depressed and had indicated that he longer wanted to live like he was, and wanted to die. The very little progress that he had made was evaporating in rapid fashion. Needless to say it was a very sad situation.

Two days ago in the morning, we saw a ambulance and 2 paramedic quick-response vehicles at the farm, backed up to the house. This morning we learned that he passed away last night in hospital. Needless to say, the local area is in shock as this is a well-known family.

Lesson of the day, is never take ANYTHING for granted, make the most of EVERYDAY, and above all, you are here for a short time, so enjoy everyday to the fullest.

R.I.P. Harry, we'll all miss you.

So sad rottiman . My wife's dad had a AAA rupture bush hogging the fields 10 years ago. They brought him back 7 times during the ordeal, the last time they had given up but his heart suddenly started again on it's own. He never really did anything after this ordeal but was still a good man and wanted to help anyone in anyway he could just didn't have any physical capability. He died 3 years ago from cancer that was a very rapidly spreading type after one a few months of being diagnosed. You are right in saying that you never know. Don't ever take tomorrow for granted. I do my best to keep moving and doing everything I enjoy and sometimes stuff I don't. I was taken down a few notches 2 years ago myself but hopefully a few new joints in another couple years and it'll get easier.

I'm sorry for your loss of a good man rottiman, the mind can control lots of things.
My grandfather, decided he was going to go after he lost his oldest son. His answer, I have buried my 6 siblings and have now my oldest child, I won't live to do another..

I DO believe as age takes things away, we should be able to chose enough is enough.,

Is there anything someone could do for the family?

There is a fund up locally to help with donations. He apparently wanted no viewing, service or send-off. Everyone is kinda on the side lines waiting to see what the family needs or desires. There are three adult sons to help out with a fairly large operation. Time will tell.................

That really is a sad story but sad to say, he is probably much better off. That does not help the rest of the family but perhaps I've been close to that situation before I can understand his feelings totally. It is much tougher than most people can imagine. I pray that he will rest in peace now and that his family will be comforted.
