    Well that’s out but now I’ve got major joist issues but the worst is the cold air return... Found why we get sick more than normal in the winter...

    They cut the joist in half for the sewer pipe and the only thing holding it up is the tin from the cold air return.

    The sewer pipe has 6 yes 6! Fernco’s on it! :startled: It’s so heavy that I’m almost certain the amount of flooring layers meant the flange wasn’t installed all the way....

    Tomorrow I am doing the strengthening and leveling of the floor and replacing a few floor joists.

    I’m most likely going to build an LVL of sorts and buy a couple jacks to run under the floor span.

    Probably going to sister the joists to level it out.

    Shouldn't really be a return air in a bathroom.:fart:
    Might consider moving the toilet flange to miss the joist. It'll make the toidy a couple inches farther into the room, but at least you won't fall into crawl taking a dump-a-roo.:whistle:

    That sounds like my place. Did you also run into a 3' W x 8' T section one end of the bathtub that had 17 individual little pieces of whatever (drywall, wood paneling, some sort of plastic, wood block etc) to cover beneath the plastic panel? If so, I know where the crack team that built my place went next :picard:.

    The plan is to remove the cast and put a new cleanout at the ground level then convert it to pvc. We can move the toilet wherever after that...... That cast mess has to go.

    I think I have come up with a decent plan to replace all those joists with new ones. and support the floor at the same time. Unfortunately I am gonna have to re-plumb again to get it done properly. All the pipes are right in the way.....

    Pete you have opened the proverbial can of worms.:doh: the good news is once its fixed you know its right.. If it helps, in older homes ime the bathroom is the worst!

    It’s so bad I just went and picked up all new joists and hangers. :picard:Rather than fixing existing problems I’m just tearing al that crap out and starting over:dex:

    I’m officially at the point that I need a second person to finish the joists and floor. Go figure I have a no show...:loco: :crazy:


    Very annoying. Wife would help but her thimb is broken and still healing so Gonna have to wait I guess..

    Mold making you sick? Or worse mold from the sewer line patches leak? I have to wonder if whatever was going on there could trigger your migraines too?

    If you don't have plans to seal and insulate the crawlspace someday it may be worth installing insulation under the bathroom floor.
    Some board foam installed between the joists and in contact with the subflooring would warm that floor in the winter.
    It may also be a good time to insulate your PEX piping - at least the hot water side.

    The plumbing was installed out of desperation :whistle: when I did it but now it’s getting re done and we are installing all new after the bathroom is finished. Also redoing all the drains and septic for the toilet. I’m thinking of possibly doing copper crimp lines we have the tool at work and they are hands down better than sweating them but the price might be a bit to high so I won’t know until after if I’m using pex or copper.

    Insulation is a good idea I was thinking about foam board in between the joists before the subfloor goes down:salute: I hope anyways!

    My understanding is that it should be directly under (touching) the subfloor. Money and time well spent.
