It was nice when we could do as we want or please. Starting a project and getting dirty was normal, and you didn’t have to shower and shave before going to a hardware store. Now, people do look at you and at what you are wearing and driving and whether or not you look like a pile of dirt.

This is why most people are amazed when they talk to me and learn that I a college educated and have a "good job". I wear normal casual or work style clothes. I am in the field a lot, own older vehicles and can actually fix and work on things. I can fix an outboard motor, do work on my cars , can do limited construction type work, finish or rough, know how to fix a car or tractor , weld, do electrical work etc. Apparently those are all skills or trails of a common worker or something. ..I don't know, people seem surprised I can do them though. So much of society has lost the ability or drive to work or help themselves or neighbor and just pay some one to do it! But I can't pay someone to do everything that needs done and I get pleasure out of fixing or doing my own work.

As someone else mentioned, the booze adds up! $400 in wine alone. $200 in steaks.

Wow. Is that your stash? I was that close to it.
It kind of looks like my sister's refrigerator in Alaska, but a lot lot lot more organized.

Foggy, Foggy mornings here and I have three loads of wash to put out on the line. We are having August type weather already. Made a trip down island yesterday and now we have two clean computers with no extras in them. I almost feel I have my baby back again. Car got its 40,000 km checkup so it is good to go. I got some time to spend in a wool shop. Of course I didn't come away empty handed!

An older cousin told me if you drink at home, go home and drink. Good advice.

I still walk into ANY store wearing whatever I’ve been while working on projects. Don’t care if I have paint on me or not. Sawdust? Don’t care.
My truck’s rocker panels? Rusted. Long creased dent on truck bed? So what.
Of course, living in southwest Virginia, these things don’t really matter, but if probably operate the same way even in them high falootin’ places too.
Know why? Cos I don’t care about that crap.
    :D

X2. I'm not showing up to work or going to a decent restaurant completely full of paint (mind you work is the only place I wear more or less perfect condition clothes, unless it's new and I haven't damaged it yet) but why would you put good clothes on to go to a hardware store and have to change again to resume your project?????

When we first moved here it was still at least semi-rural. Had families with small farm and whatnot. Didn’t matter what you looked like or where you went. Skip 30 years ahead, and the city folk have moved here for a “better “ life and people are wearing clean clothes in Home Depot. I even question myself if I have paint, dirt or dust on me I have to run to HD to pick up something in the middle of a project. Dang it, they’re brainwashing me!
