I posted this stuff last winter but had no leaves to go with the pic.

My guess is that it is butternut? Was looking to maybe have some turned in to cutting boards IMG_20180713_122418331.jpg IMG_20180713_122406906_HDR.jpg IMG_20180713_122402288_HDR.jpg

That was my mistake. I looked at the leaves and thought Backwoods Savage said bitternut. Looking at it now I would also agree.

Bark doesn't look like Butternut I've seen. Twigs look like opposite arrangement. I'd say some type of swamp Ash. X2 on the fine boards though.

Agree that the leaves seem to be attached on opposite sides of the twig. In order to be a Carya (hickory) species, the leaves would need to be alternate. Any chance of getting a bigger twig showing more leaves attached to it? At this point, I’m leaning toward an Ash species... like blue ash. Problem is, Blue Ash doesn’t seem to be native to Maine... more pics please...

I think some folks mixed up butternut, or white walnut, with bitternut hickory. The leaf arrangement does kinda look like butternut

I keep looking at the opposite leafing and think some type of ash. But the wood says hickory and not any kind of ash we have here. I'm sooo confused...

I will cast a vote for Butternut. Like a lot of trees the bark will change it's look as the tree matures. Logs look to be about 10"-12".
